• Day 1: Welcome to Sardinia

  Arrival at Cagliari airport and transfer to Arbatax. Accommodation at three-star hotel and welcome dinner.

• Day 2: From Arbatax to Galtellì

  This year the start of Epic Sardinia is in Arbatax, one of the most beautiful seaside resorts on the east coast of the island. This area is very special because it is the gateway to the Gennargentu National Park. And the road through it, the SS125, is of rare beauty: 50 km in the wilderness. After a flat section, you climb up the SS125 toward the town of Baunei. The first climb is substantial for about 9 km. This is followed by a stretch of ups and downs that takes us gently to the Silana Pass, at 1200 meters above sea level. A cappuccino stop with a view and down to Cala Gonone on an exhilarating and incredibly scenic descent. We descend to Cala Gonone and face the second climb of the day. The steep and spectacular old road that used to connect the small town to the civilized world: a terrace overlooking the Gulf of Orosei, carved out of the whitest limestone and dotted with junipers. From there, more easy ups and downs and a flat stretch will take us to the ancient village of Galtellì. A little gem and a very well-preserved historic center will welcome us to the medieval heritage of this ancient land. We would not characterize this stage as hard. Only the second climb has a few short steep segments. But keep calm, Epic Sardinia is just beginning! Overnight at the hotel in Galtellì, with an excellent traditional dinner.

• Day 3: From Galtellì to Bitti

  From one charming historic town to another. And the road that connects these two special places is also... special. Very often Sardinian geography is characterized by very simple names given to towns or mountains. Mountains are often named after their color. Monte Albo is one of these and it means white mountain. As you ride this stage you will discover that such a simple name is often the best way to describe a place. There is no better way to name this limestone mountain so white that it appears to be covered in snow. A long stretch skirts this breathtaking mountain, leaving visitors speechless. The main climb begins after the town of Lula, an iconic town in the Baronia subregion. From there, we climb for about 15 km at a very easy grade (2.1 avg, max 15%). After a long descent we encounter the main climb of the day: 15 km at less than 5 percent gradient that takes us into the heart of the Tepilora Regional Park. Pure and wild nature in true Sardinian style. From there, another long descent takes us to Bitti.

• Day 4: From Bitti to Belvì

  From the northernmost part of Barbagia to the southernmost: Belvì. In a stage that crosses this territory that has preserved with great pride its traditions and language. The Barbagia of Bitti and the entire first part of the stage, ridden from north to south, develop in a typical Sardinian hilly environment: short to medium climbs and open spaces with cork forests and pastures. As one proceeds northward, the environment changes - as is often the case on our island - leaving room for more typically mountainous vegetation. Green and very lush. Unexpectedly lush for visitors. To enjoy the shade of the chestnut trees in the forests of southern Barbagia, we have to face longer climbs. In particular, we have two long stretches. One to get to the town of Fonni, the second to reach the highest pass of the day: Tascusì, above the village of Desulo. From there we descend to Tonara, the capital of the famous soft Sardinian nougat made with honey and almonds, finally to Belvì, our destination. A challenging stage rewarded by a cena Barbaricina, a typical dinner, in the pretty village of Belvì.

• Day 5: From Belvì to Torre dei Corsari

  We used to tell our guests that one of the most beautiful things about Sardinia is its drastic change of environment and landscape: so great that it feels like we have changed countries in the space of 50 kilometers. Today we will have this experience. We get up in the morning, get ready for the journey and start cycling through the mountains of Gennargentu. Soon we start descending through cork forests and open pastures typical of Sardinia, descend to the sea on the west coast, cross a flat region between rice fields and wheat fields, even pass through a fishing village on a salt lagoon, and end the stage right on the sea at Torre dei Corsari. Five Sardinia's in one stage: unbelievable! There are no specific climbs to describe: they're all rather short and we rate this stage as relaxing and very panoramic. A good way to recover before the last two Epic days.

• Day 6: Torre dei Corsari to Iglesias

  The southwest coast of the island is one of our favorite riding areas. The reason is simple: the geology has made these coasts less suitable for large tourist resorts: there are many more miles of cliffs and far fewer beaches. The few, fantastic, beaches are not easy places to swim in summer because they are often hit by waves. Finally, most of the southwest coast was a former mining area, and the large mining sites have kept tourist investment away. What remains now that mining has been over for many decades? Simple: hundreds of miles of breathtaking ups and downs along the coast, in a wilderness environment far removed from mass tourism and automobile traffic: just the kind of playground for our Epic riders. On this stage we have a long but fairly easy climb to Montevecchio - the capital of the former mining industry - then a nice up and down to Arbus. A long and exhilarating descent to Portixeddu - a very small tourist resort - and finally one of the most beautiful coastal roads in the world. We consider this a rather challenging stage, because there is a little bit of everything: a long climb at the beginning, a technical descent, a series of ups and downs with some rather spicy climbs, even a bit of flat. But you won't forget the beauty of the views from the southwest. The stage ends in one of Sardinia's oldest towns, Iglesias. First off the radar of tourists, it is now getting the acclaim it deserves after an amazing recovery of its historic center and medieval heritage.

• Day 7: From Iglesias to Chia

  We have talked about different subregions of Sardinia. The last stage is all within a single, rather large subregion that has - again - very different types of environment. The name of this region is Sulcis. Its capital is Iglesias, the city we leave on this stage and which was the epicenter of the Sardinian mining industry. Sulcis had the largest concentration of mining sites on the island for centuries, and the entire economy was based on mining. With the demise of this industry, the Sulcis economy collapsed and only in recent decades have the old activities been replaced - slowly - by tourism. Expect another wild, beautiful and sparsely populated region, and another ideal area for us cyclists. The stage is divided into three distinct sections: it starts flat for about 20 km, then a long, easy climb (6k at 3%) and descent introduce us to the last road jewel of Epic Sardinia: the stretch of coastline from the marina at Teulada to the seaside resort of Chia. Another unforgettable coastal road that our guests would like to continue riding forever. Unfortunately, good things have an end, but our end is always a happy one: we end our trip in a nice hotel on one of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia, in Chia. And we celebrate the end of another great Epic and the birth of fantastic new friendships!

• Tag 1: Willkommen in Sardinien

• Tag 2: Von Arbatax bis Galtellì

  Dieses Jahr findet der Start von Epic Sardinia in Arbatax statt, einem der schönsten Badeorte an der Ostküste der Insel. Diese Gegend ist etwas ganz Besonderes, denn sie ist das Tor zum Gennargentu-Nationalpark. Und die Straße, die durch ihn führt, die SS125, ist von seltener Schönheit: 50 km in der Wildnis. Nach einem flachen Abschnitt geht es auf der SS125 hinauf in Richtung der Stadt Baunei. Die erste Steigung ist für etwa 9 km beträchtlich. Danach folgt eine Strecke mit Auf- und Abfahrten, die uns sanft zum Silana-Pass auf 1200 m Höhe führt. Nach einem Cappuccino-Stopp mit Aussicht geht es auf einer aufregenden und landschaftlich unglaublich schönen Abfahrt hinunter nach Cala Gonone. Nach dem Abstieg nach Cala Gonone steht uns der zweite Anstieg des Tages bevor. Die steile und spektakuläre alte Straße, die die kleine Stadt mit der zivilisierten Welt verband: eine Terrasse mit Blick auf den Golf von Orosei, die aus dem weißesten Kalkstein gehauen und mit Wacholderbäumen gesäumt ist. Von dort aus geht es leicht bergauf und bergab und eine flache Strecke führt uns zu dem alten Dorf Galtellì. Ein kleines Juwel und ein sehr gut erhaltenes historisches Zentrum werden uns das mittelalterliche Erbe dieses alten Landes näher bringen. Wir würden diese Etappe nicht als schwer bezeichnen. Nur der zweite Anstieg hat ein paar kurze steile Abschnitte. Aber bleib ruhig, Epic Sardinia fängt gerade erst an! Übernachtung im Hotel in Galtellì, mit einem ausgezeichneten traditionellen Abendessen.

• Tag 3: Von Galtellì bis Bitti

  Von einer charmanten historischen Stadt zur anderen. Und die Straße, die diese beiden besonderen Orte miteinander verbindet, ist auch... besonders. Die sardische Geografie zeichnet sich oft durch sehr einfache Namen aus, die den Städten oder Bergen gegeben werden. Berge werden oft nach ihrer Farbe benannt. Der Monte Albo ist einer dieser Berge und bedeutet "weißer Berg". Während du auf dieser Etappe unterwegs bist, wirst du feststellen, dass ein so einfacher Name oft die beste Art ist, einen Ort zu beschreiben. Es gibt keinen besseren Namen für diesen Kalksteinberg, der so weiß ist, als wäre er mit Schnee bedeckt. Eine lange Strecke führt an diesem atemberaubenden Berg vorbei und lässt die Besucher sprachlos zurück. Der Hauptanstieg beginnt nach der Stadt Lula, einer ikonischen Stadt in der Subregion Baronia. Von dort aus klettern wir etwa 15 km mit einer sehr leichten Steigung (2,1 Durchschnitt, maximal 15%). Nach einem langen Abstieg folgt der Hauptanstieg des Tages: 15 km mit weniger als 5 Prozent Steigung, die uns ins Herz des Regionalparks Tepilora führen. Reine und wilde Natur im echten sardischen Stil. Von dort aus führt uns eine weitere lange Abfahrt nach Bitti

• Tag 4: Von Bitti bis Belvì

  Vom nördlichsten Teil der Barbagia bis zum südlichsten: Belvì. Die Etappe führt durch ein Gebiet, das mit großem Stolz seine Traditionen und seine Sprache bewahrt hat. Die Barbagia von Bitti und der gesamte erste Teil der Etappe, der von Norden nach Süden gefahren wird, entwickeln sich in einer typisch sardischen hügeligen Umgebung: kurze bis mittlere Steigungen und offene Flächen mit Korkwäldern und Weiden. Je weiter man nach Norden kommt, desto mehr ändert sich die Umgebung - wie so oft auf unserer Insel - und macht Platz für eine typisch bergige Vegetation. Grün und sehr üppig. Unerwartet üppig für die Besucher. Um den Schatten der Kastanienbäume in den Wäldern der südlichen Barbagia zu genießen, müssen wir längere Anstiege in Kauf nehmen. Insbesondere haben wir zwei lange Abschnitte. Eine, um in die Stadt Fonni zu gelangen, die zweite, um den höchsten Pass des Tages zu erreichen: Tascusì, oberhalb des Dorfes Desulo. Von dort geht es hinunter nach Tonara, der Hauptstadt des berühmten weichen sardischen Nougats aus Honig und Mandeln, und schließlich nach Belvì, unserem Ziel. Eine anspruchsvolle Etappe, die mit einer cena Barbaricina, einem typischen Abendessen, in dem hübschen Dorf Belvì belohnt wird.

• Tag 5: Von Belvì bis Torre dei Corsari

  Wir haben unseren Gästen immer gesagt, dass eines der schönsten Dinge an Sardinien die drastische Veränderung der Umgebung und der Landschaft ist: so groß, dass es sich anfühlt, als ob wir innerhalb von 50 Kilometern das Land gewechselt hätten. Heute werden wir diese Erfahrung machen. Wir stehen morgens auf, machen uns reisefertig und radeln los durch die Berge von Gennargentu. Schon bald geht es durch die für Sardinien typischen Korkwälder und offenen Weiden hinunter zum Meer an der Westküste, wir durchqueren eine flache Region zwischen Reis- und Weizenfeldern, kommen sogar durch ein Fischerdorf an einer Salzlagune und beenden die Etappe direkt am Meer in Torre dei Corsari. Fünf Sardinien in einer Etappe: Unglaublich! Es gibt keine besonderen Anstiege zu beschreiben: Sie sind alle eher kurz und wir bewerten diese Etappe als entspannend und sehr aussichtsreich. Eine gute Möglichkeit, um sich vor den letzten beiden epischen Tagen zu erholen.

• Tag 6: Von Torre dei Corsari bis Iglesias

  Die Südwestküste der Insel ist eines unserer Lieblingsreviere. Der Grund dafür ist einfach: Die Geologie hat diese Küsten weniger geeignet für große Touristenresorts gemacht: Es gibt viel mehr Kilometer an Klippen und viel weniger Strände. Die wenigen, fantastischen Strände sind im Sommer nicht zum Schwimmen geeignet, weil sie oft von Wellen getroffen werden. Schließlich war der größte Teil der Südwestküste ein ehemaliges Bergbaugebiet, und die großen Abbaustätten haben touristische Investitionen ferngehalten. Was bleibt, nachdem der Bergbau seit vielen Jahrzehnten vorbei ist? Ganz einfach: Hunderte von Kilometern mit atemberaubenden Auf- und Abfahrten entlang der Küste, in einer Wildnis fernab von Massentourismus und Autoverkehr: genau der richtige Spielplatz für unsere Epic-Rider. Auf dieser Etappe gibt es einen langen, aber relativ leichten Anstieg nach Montevecchio - der Hauptstadt der ehemaligen Bergbauindustrie - und dann ein schönes Auf und Ab nach Arbus. Eine lange und aufregende Abfahrt nach Portixeddu - einem sehr kleinen Touristenort - und schließlich eine der schönsten Küstenstraßen der Welt. Wir halten diese Etappe für ziemlich anspruchsvoll, denn sie hat von allem etwas: einen langen Anstieg am Anfang, eine technische Abfahrt, eine Reihe von Auf- und Abfahrten mit einigen ziemlich pikanten Anstiegen und sogar ein bisschen Flachland. Aber du wirst die Schönheit der Aussichten im Südwesten nicht vergessen. Die Etappe endet in einer der ältesten Städte Sardiniens, Iglesias. Nachdem die Stadt zunächst nicht auf dem Radar der Touristen war, bekommt sie jetzt die Anerkennung, die sie verdient, nachdem ihr historisches Zentrum und ihr mittelalterliches Erbe auf erstaunliche Weise wiederhergestellt wurden.

• Tag 7: Von Iglesias bis Chia

  Wir haben über verschiedene Teilregionen Sardiniens gesprochen. Die letzte Etappe liegt in einer einzigen, ziemlich großen Unterregion, die - wieder - sehr unterschiedliche Umwelttypen aufweist. Der Name dieser Region ist Sulcis. Ihre Hauptstadt ist Iglesias, die Stadt, die wir auf dieser Etappe verlassen und die das Epizentrum der sardischen Bergbauindustrie war. Sulcis hatte jahrhundertelang die größte Konzentration an Bergbaugebieten auf der Insel, und die gesamte Wirtschaft basierte auf dem Bergbau. Mit dem Niedergang dieser Industrie brach die Wirtschaft von Sulcis zusammen und erst in den letzten Jahrzehnten wurden die alten Aktivitäten - langsam - durch den Tourismus ersetzt. Es erwartet dich eine weitere wilde, schöne und dünn besiedelte Region und ein weiteres ideales Gebiet für uns Radfahrer. Die Etappe ist in drei verschiedene Abschnitte unterteilt: Zu Beginn sind 20 km flach, dann folgt ein langer, leichter Anstieg (6 km mit 3 %) und eine Abfahrt, die uns zum letzten Straßenjuwel von Epic Sardinia führen: der Küstenabschnitt vom Yachthafen in Teulada bis zum Badeort Chia. Eine weitere unvergessliche Küstenstraße, die unsere Gäste am liebsten für immer weiterfahren würden. Leider haben alle guten Dinge ein Ende, aber unser Ende ist immer ein glückliches: Wir beenden unsere Reise in einem schönen Hotel an einem der schönsten Strände Sardiniens, in Chia. Und wir feiern das Ende einer weiteren großartigen Epic und die Geburt fantastischer neuer Freundschaften!

• Tag 2: Von Chia Bis Portixeddu

  Große Neuigkeiten! Der Start des Epic Sardinia ist in Chia, einem der schönsten Orte am Meer im Südwesten der Insel. Im Süden Sardiniens gibt es keine hohen Berge oder Bergketten, aber das heißt nicht, dass es einfach wird oder es keine langen Steigungen geben wird. Erfahrene Radfahrer wissen, dass viele mäßige oder kurze Hügel anstrengender sein können als einige lange Steigungen. Naja, wir haben hier alles also kann man auch gut vergleichen. Nach einem flachen Start gibt es eine abwechselnd steigend und fallende Sektion an der wunderschönen Süd-Westküste. Die Etappe ist in zwei Teile aufgeteilt, die jeweils einen besonderen Küstenabschnitt aufweisen: Sie werden verstehen, warum viele denken, dass es sich um einige der besten Küstenstraßen der Welt handelt. Der erste, aber auch einzige lange Anstieg ist der, der direkt nach Nebida beginnt. Es ist eine berühmte Strecke, die viele nicht ohne einige Stopps fahren können. Nicht nur, weil sie zu steil ist, sondern weil die Aussichten zu schön sind! Wir würden diese Etappe nicht als hart einstufen. Die Steigungen können lang sein, aber das Gefälle ist ziemlich seicht. Profis jedoch sagen, Es ist nicht die Strecke, die eine anstrengende Fahrt ausmachet, es sind die Fahrer. Also ruhig Blut, Epic Sardinia ist erst am Anfang! Übernachtung in einem Hotel in Portixeddu, mit einem erstaunlichen traditionellen Abendessen.

• Tag 3: Von Portixeddu Bis Orroli

  Von der Westküste ins Zentrum Sardiniens, genauer gesagt nach Orroli. Ausblicke, Landschaft, Art des Radfahrens, alles ändert sich langsam aber entschieden, je weiter wir uns von der Küste entfernen. Aber der Weg, auf dem wir die Küste verlassen, ist unvergesslich: ein langer und kurvenreicher Anstieg, bei dem die Kurven nur dazu da zu sein scheinen, dass wir das Meer von oben genießen können. Von dort aus beginnen wir eine lange Strecke über Getreidefelder in den Ebenen im zentralen Westen Sardiniens, bevor der zweite Teil der Etappe beginnt, der sanfte Hügel und kurze Anstiege bis zum alten Dorf Orroli bietet. Unterkunft und Abendessen sind in einem Albergo diffuso. Die Lage ist sehr typisch und die Mahlzeiten gehören zu den besten traditionellen Speisen, die man auf Sardinien bekommen kann.

• Tag 4: Von Orroli Bis Villagrande Strisaili

  Diese vierte Etappe überlebt die großen Änderungen, die im neuesten Epic Sardinia eingeführt wurden - es gibt keinen Grund, einen Sieger zu verwerfen! Von Orroli aus fahren wir in Richtung und durch die wildeste Region Sardiniens, genannt Barbagia. Wir verlassen die kleine Stadt und fahren in Richtung Norden. Nach einer spektakulären und kurvenreichen Abfahrt erreichen wir den tiefsten Punkt der Fahrt: den unteren Flufendosa See. Wir klettern eine Weile mit dem Blick auf den See zu unserer Rechten und nach einem flachen Abschnitt steht uns der zweite richtige Anstieg des Tages bevor: sieben Kilometer lang, aber mit leichter Steigung. Links erwischen wir ein echtes Juwel unter den sardischen Straßen: die alte SS389, die den östlichen Teil der Gennargentu-Bergkette durchschneidet. Es ist ein sehr wilder Abschnitt, es gibt nicht viele Straßen wie diese in Europa und jedes Mal, wenn wir darauf fahren können, fühlen wir das Privileg, Radfahrer zu sein, da wir uns alle Zeit der Welt nehmen, um die ganze Schönheit und Freiheit zu genießen, die unser Sport gewähren kann. • Tag 5: Von Villagrande Strisaili Bis Fonni

  Nachdem wir jahrelang ein Radtourenunternehmen betrieben haben, sind wir hier und da auf der Insel gefahren, aber wenn es darum geht zu sagen, welches der schönste sardische Anstieg ist, ist die Antwort immer der Talana-Anstieg. Und da ist sie! Um jede einzelne Haarnadelkurve genießen zu können, müssen wir den ganzen Weg hinunter fahren, fast auf Meereshöhe. In der Tat beginnt der Anstieg, der auf 1100m des Monte Genziana gipfelt, sehr niedrig, auf etwa 15m ASL. Von dort aus sind es ca. 17 km bergauf, während der eigentliche Segment beginnt - wenn der Anstieg wie eine Wand vor uns auftaucht, sind es "nur 12 km", mit einer durchschnittlichen Steigung von 6,9 %: ein Kinderspiel und der einzige "Hors Catégorie"-Anstieg der Insel, für diejenigen, die sich mehr für die Statistiken der Radprofis interessieren. Wir empfehlen, sich hier nicht zu sehr anzustrengen, denn die Etappe endet nicht auf ihrem Gipfel. Es folgt ein weiterer - langer - Anstieg auf den Correboi-Pass: 10 km mit 3,6 % Steigung, praktisch ein 'leg loosener' im Vergleich zu Talana. Die Spitze des Correboi-Passes - 1246m - ist wirklich spektakulär, denn sie ist wie eine Terrasse mit einem Blick nach Osten und einem weiteren nach Westen. Übernachtung in Fonni im 3 Sterne hotel.

• Tag 6: Fonni Loop

  Wir werden sehen, wie süß der Gennargentu sein kann, da er für den größten Teil der Fahrt geringe Steigungen bietet. Aber wir werden auch sehen, dass es verdammt hart sein kann, wenn Sie den letzten Anstieg zum Bruncu Spina col nicht respektieren, um den höchsten Gipfel der Insel zu erobern. Wir starten vom Agriturismo in Fonni auf 1100 m über dem Meeresspiegel zu einer Schleife gegen den Uhrzeigersinn. Nach einer sehr langen Abfahrt sind die ersten Anstiege nicht besonders lang und steil. Der längste Anstieg der gesamten Tour beginnt kurz vor Tonara und führt bis zur Kreuzung am Tascusì-Pass (1250 m). Dies ist ein Anstieg der zweiten Kategorie und ist fast 23 km lang, mit einer durchschnittlichen Steigung von 3%. Wir fahren ihn nie in einem Atemzug: Wir planen immer einen Zwischenstopp in Tonara ein, um einen Kaffee zu trinken und ein paar Blöcke des weltberühmten Torrone zu genießen, für den dieser Ort berühmt ist. Nachdem wir Tonara mit den Taschen voller Torrone verlassen haben, sind wir bereit, den Anstieg zum Pass zu bewältigen. Von dort aus noch einige Kilometer auf und ab, dann die letzte Herausforderung: der finale Anstieg auf die 1560m des Monte Bruncu Spina, wo sich die Skianlagen befinden. Keine Zeit (und kein Wetter) zum Skifahren: wir reiten zurück nach Hause. Übernachtung in Fonni im 3 Sterne hotel.

• Tag 7: Von Fonni Bis Santa Maria Navarrese

  'Back to the Sea' könnte der Titel der sechsten Etappe sein. Für diejenigen, die denken, dass dies einfach sein wird, nun, das ist es nicht. Während dieser Etappe werden wir einige der faszinierendsten und bekanntesten Hügel erleben. Von Fonni aus fahren wir abwärts in Richtung Ostküste. In der Mitte der Abfahrt nutzen wir die Gelegenheit für einen Stopp in Orgosolo und trinken einen Cappuccino inmitten der weltberühmten Wandmalereien, die jedes Jahr von tausenden Besuchern besucht werden. Der letzte Anstieg der Tour ist nicht weit. Er beginnt außerhalb von Dorgali und wird uns in etwa 20 km auf den Genna Silana Pass führen, dem Etappen-KOM des Giro d'Italia 2017. Die Erwähnung ist nicht zufällig: da 150 Profi-Riders diesen Anstieg gefahren sind, noch dazu an einem Tag mit superstarkem Rückenwind, macht jeder Versuch, einen Rekord zu brechen - zur Freude der Strava-Follower - einen massiven Unsinn. Von jeglicher Schnelligkeit abgesehen, halten wir unser Tempo und genießen sogar unbeschwert einen Verpflegungsstopp direkt vor der Gorropu-Schlucht, dem tiefsten Canyon in Europa. Wir möchten weder die Etappe noch die ganze Reise beenden, aber nach einer weiteren lustigen und langen Abfahrt erreichen wir unser Ziel: den schönen Ferienort Santa Maria Navarrese. Wir übernachten in einem 3-Sterne-Hotel in Strandnähe.

• Day 2: From Chia to Portixeddu

  Big news! This year the start of the Epic Sardinia is in Chia, one of the most beautiful seaside locations in the southwest of the island. The south of Sardinia doesn’t feature high mountains or a great mountain range, but that doesn't mean that cycling is easy or without long climbs. Experienced cyclists know that multiple medium or short hills can be much more painful that a couple of long climbs. Well, on this stage we have everything, so we can compare. After a flat and false flat start, we have have an up and down section along the amazing south west coast road. The stage is split into two parts, each one featuring a special coastline segment: you'll understand why many think these are some of the best coastal roads in the world. The first and only long climb of the day starts just after we pass Gonnesa. It's a famous stretch, that can be difficult to ride without stoping. It is not just the grade, but also the spectacular views that beckon you to take a break. We wouldn't rate this stage as tough. There are many little climbs but they are often short and rarely steep. But as pro riders say, “it's not the course that makes for a hard ride, it's the riders.” So keep calm, Epic Sardinia is only at the beginning! Overnight in a hotel in Portixeddu, with an amazing traditional dinner.

• Day 3: From Portixeddu to Orroli

  From west coast we ride into central Sardinia, crossing more than half the width of the island before reaching Orroli. Along the way the views, landscape and kind of cycling (pretty much everything) changes slowly but decidedly. We start the day with a long and winding climb. Each bend in the road seems purpose built for enjoying the sea from above. An unforgettable way to start another Epic day. From there we start a long stretch across grain fields in the flats of central western Sardinia, before the second part of the stage, that is made up of rolling hills and short climbs up to the old village of Orroli. Accommodation and dinner are in an Albergo diffuso. The location is very typical and the meals are some of the best traditional food you can get in Sardinia.

  This third stage survives the big changes introduced in this newest Epic Sardinia – there’s no point in throwing out a winner! From Orroli we ride towards and across the wildest Sardinian region, called Barbagia. We ride towards the north and after a spectacular and winding descent we get to the lowest point of the ride: the Lower Flumendosa lake. From here we begin the longest climb of the day with the view of the lake on our right side. After a small flat section, we face the second proper climb of the day: seven kilometrs, but with an easy gradient. With the majority of the climbing behind us we get to enjoy a real gem among the Sardinian roads: the old SS389 that winds along the eastern aspect of Gennargentu mountain range. It's a very remote and wild segment, there aren't many roads like it in Europe. Every time we ride it, we experience the true privilege of being cyclist, as we can take our time and enjoy all the beauty and freedom that our sport can grant. All good things must come to an end, luckly the end of this wonderful road is close to the 4-star hotel: a very quiet and comfortable accommodation with dinner.

• Day 5: From Villagrande Strisaili to Fonni

  After years running a cycling tour operation we've ridden all over the island. So when asked the inevitable question, "Where is the nicest Sardinian climb?" you can trust our answer, the Talana climb. And after today you will be able to tell us what you think. To enjoy every single hairpin we need to go all the way down, nearly to sea level. In fact the ascent, that tops at 1100m on Monte Genziana, starts very low, at only 15m ASL. From there it's about 17km up, the first five km is a nice gradual warm up for when the climb appears like a wall in front of us, leaving a 'mere 12km', with average gradient being 6.9%: a piece of cake, and the only 'Hors Catégorie' climb on the island, for those who are more into the pro cycling stats. We suggest you dont go for a KOM, as the stage doesn't end at top, in fact we are just past halfway and there is one other long climb. However the road up to the Correboi pass: 10km at 3.6% grade, is practically a leg loosener compared to Talana. The top of Correboi pass - 1246m - is really spectacular as it's like a terrace with a view on both the east and the west. It's also close to our destination: a lovely hotel in the town in Fonni. Quality (and quantity) food and great comfort are your reward.

• Day 6: Fonni Loop

  We'll see how the Gennargentu can be sweet, offering low inclines for most of the ride. But we'll also see that it can be bloody hard, if you don't respect the last climb to the Bruncu Spina col, to conquer the highest road on the island. We start from the Agriturismo near Fonni at 1100 m above sea level for an anticlockwise loop. After a long descent, we come to the first two climbs of the day, neither of which are particularly long or steep. The longest climb of the whole tour begins right before Tonara and continues all the way up to the intersection at Tascusì pass (1250m). This is a second category climb and is nearly 23 km long, with an average incline of 3%. Don't worry as we plan a stop in the middle, at Tonara, to enjoy a coffee and some blocks of the world famous Torrone of which this town is proudly a renowned maker. Leaving Tonara with the pockets full of Torrone, we're ready to complete the climb up to the pass. From there, we can enjoy a short descent before the last challenge: the final climb up to the 1560m of Monte Bruncu Spina, where the ski facilities are located. No time (nor weather) for skiing, we ride down back to where we started the day. After a glorious ride, we’ll spend another night at the same hotel in Fonni.

• Day 7: From Fonni to Santa Maria Navarrese

  Back to the Sea could be the title of the sixth stage. For those who think that this will be easy, well, it’s not. During this stage we’ll experience some of the most fascinating and known hills. Leaving Fonni we ride downwards towards the eastern coast. In the middle of the descent we will enjoy a stop in Orgosolo and grab a cappuccino among the world famous mural paintings that are visited by thousand visitors every year. The last climb of the tour is not far. It begins after the town of Dorgali and in about 20km will take us atop Genna Silana Pass. Unfortunatly for KOM hunters the Strava KOM was set durring a stage of the 2017 Giro d'Italia. Mentioning is not just a joke: as on that day in 2017 it wasn't just 150 of the best pro riders racing up this climb, but there was also a massive tailwind. This makes any attempt to break the record - for the pleasure of your Strava followers - almost certain to end in failure. All levity aside, after reaching the top at your own pace you will be rewarded with a lunch stop right in front of the Gorropu gorge, the deepest canyon in Europe. While your legs maybe happy to know all the climbing is over we hope your heads and hearts will disagree as this means the end of the tour is near. We have one last fun and long descent before we get to our destination: the lovely resort of Santa Maria Navarrese. We’ll overnight at a three-star hotel near the beach.

• Giorno 2: Da Chia a Portixeddu

  Grande novità! L'inizio della Epic Sardinia è a Chia, una delle più belle località balneari del sud-ovest dell'isola. Il sud della Sardegna non è caratterizzato da alte montagne o grandi catene montuose, ma questo non significa che pedalare sia facile o senza lunghe salite. I ciclisti esperti sanno che più colline medie o corte possono essere molto più faticose di un paio di salite lunghe. Beh, in questa tappa abbiamo tutto, quindi possiamo fare un confronto. Dopo una partenza in piano e falso piano, troviamo un saliscendi lungo la fantastica strada della costa sud ovest. La tappa è divisa in due parti, ognuna con un segmento di costa speciale: capirete perché molti pensano che siano alcune delle più belle strade costiere del mondo. La prima, ma anche l'unica lunga salita, è quella che inizia subito dopo Nebida. È un tratto famoso, che molti non possono percorrere senza qualche sosta. Non perché è troppo ripido, ma perché il panorama è troppo bello per non fotografarlo! Non considereremmo questa tappa così difficile. Le salite possono essere lunghe, ma la pendenza è sempre piuttosto leggera. Ma come dicono i ciclisti professionisti, "non è il percorso che rende la corsa difficile, sono i corridori". Quindi state calmi, Epic Sardinia è solo all'inizio! Pernottamento in un hotel a Portixeddu, con una fantastica cena tradizionale.

• Giorno 3: Da Portixeddu a Orroli

  Dalla costa occidentale alla Sardegna centrale, precisamente ad Orroli. Panorami, paesaggio, tipo di ciclismo, tutto cambia lentamente ma decisamente più ci allontaniamo dalla costa. Ma il modo in cui ci allontaniamo dalla costa è indimenticabile: una lunga e tortuosa salita dove le curve sembrano essere lì solo per farci godere il mare dall'alto. Da lì iniziamo un lungo tratto attraverso i campi di grano nella pianura della Sardegna centro-occidentale prima della seconda parte della tappa, che propone dolci colline e brevi salite fino al vecchio borgo di Orroli. Il pernottamento e la cena sono in un Albergo diffuso. La location è molto tipica e i pasti sono tra i migliori piatti tradizionali che si possono trovare in Sardegna.

• Giorno 4: Da Orroli a Villagrande Strisaili

  Questa terza tappa sopravvive ai grandi cambiamenti introdotti nella nuovissima Epic Sardinia - non ha senso eliminare un cavallo vincente! Da Orroli si pedala attraverso la regione più selvaggia della Sardegna: la Barbagia. Lasciamo il piccolo paese e pedaliamo verso nord e dopo una spettacolare e tortuosa discesa arriviamo al punto più basso della tappa: il lago Basso Flufendosa. Saliamo per un po' con la vista del lago sulla destra e dopo un tratto pianeggiante affrontiamo la seconda salita vera e propria della giornata: sette chilometri, ma con pendenza facile. A sinistra e cogliamo un vero gioiello tra le strade sarde: la vecchia SS389 che taglia la parte orientale della catena del Gennargentu. È un segmento molto selvaggio, non ci sono molte strade come questa in Europa e ogni volta che possiamo pedalarci su, sentiamo il privilegio di essere ciclisti perché ci prendiamo tutto il tempo necessario per godere di tutta la bellezza e la libertà che il nostro sport può regalarci. Tutte le cose belle finiscono. La fine di questa strada è vicina ad un hotel 4 stelle: una sistemazione molto tranquilla e confortevole all'interno di un parco.

• Giorno 5: Da Villagrande Strisaili a Fonni

  Dopo anni di tour in bicicletta abbiamo pedalato qua e là sull'isola, ma quando si tratta di dire quale sia la più bella salita sarda, la risposta è sempre la salita di Talana. Ed eccola! Per godersi ogni singolo tornante bisogna scendere fino in fondo, quasi al livello del mare. Infatti la salita, che arriva a 1100m del Monte Genziana, parte da molto in basso, a circa 15m ASL. Da lì si sale per circa 17 km, mentre il segmento vero e proprio - quando la salita appare come una parete davanti a noi, è di "soli 12 km", con una pendenza media del 6,9%: un gioco da ragazzi, e l'unica salita "Hors Catégorie" dell'isola, per chi è più appassionato delle statistiche del ciclismo professionistico. Non suggeriamo mai di spingere troppo su questo punto, perché la tappa non finisce in cima. Ci sarà un'altra - lunga - salita sul passo del Correboi: 10 km al 3,6%, praticamente una passeggiatina rispetto a Talana. La cima del passo del Correboi - 1246m - è davvero spettacolare perché è come una terrazza con vista sia ad est che ad ovest. E' anche vicino alla meta: un grazioso hotel in centro a Fonni.

• Giorno 6: Fonni Loop

  Vedremo come il Gennargentu può essere dolce, offrendo basse pendenze per la maggior parte del viaggio. Ma vedremo anche che può essere dannatamente difficile se non si rispetta l'ultima salita al Monte Bruncu Spina, per conquistare la cima più alta dell'isola. Si parte dall'Agriturismo di Fonni a 1100 m di altitudine per un giro in senso antiorario. Dopo una lunghissima discesa, le prime salite non sono particolarmente lunghe o ripide. La salita più lunga di tutto il tour inizia poco prima di Tonara e prosegue fino all'incrocio al passo del Tascusì (1250 m). Si tratta di una salita di seconda categoria, lunga quasi 23 km, con una pendenza media del 3%. Non ci è mai capitato di percorrerla in un solo fiato: prevediamo sempre una sosta nel mezzo, a Tonara, per gustare un caffè e alcuni blocchi del Torrone, famoso in tutto il mondo, di cui questa cittadina è orgogliosa di essere una rinomata produttrice. Lasciato Tonara con le tasche piene di Torrone, siamo pronti a completare la salita fino al passo. Da lì, ancora qualche chilometro di saliscendi, poi l'ultima sfida: la salita finale fino ai 1560m del Monte Bruncu Spina, dove si trovano gli impianti sciistici. Non c'è tempo (né meteo) per sciare: torniamo a casa. Dopo una gloriosa cavalcata, passeremo un'altra notte nello stesso hotel in centro a Fonni.

• Giorno 7: Da Fonni a Santa Maria Navarrese

  'Ritorno al Mare' potrebbe essere il titolo della sesta tappa. Per chi pensa che sarà facile, beh, non lo è. Durante questa tappa ci godremo alcune delle salite più affascinanti e conosciute. Lasciato Fonni scendiamo verso la costa orientale. Nel bel mezzo della discesa cogliamo l'occasione per fare una sosta a Orgosolo e prendere un cappuccino tra i murales di fama mondiale che ogni anno vengono visitate da migliaia di visitatori. L'ultima salita del tour non è lontana. Si parte da Dorgali e in circa 20 km ci porterà in cima al Passo di Genna Silana, già GPM del Giro d'Italia 2017.
  

  La citazione non è casuale: avere 150 corridori professionisti che hanno pedalato su quella salita, per di più in una giornata con fortissimo vento alle spalle, fa di ogni tentativo di battere un record - per il piacere dei vostri seguaci di Strava - un enorme nonsenso.

  Lasciata da parte ogni velleità, teniamo un passo turistico e ci godiamo anche con leggerezza una sosta gastronomica proprio di fronte alla gola di Gorropu, il canyon più profondo d'Europa. Non vorremmo che né la tappa né l'intero viaggio finissero, ma dopo un'altra divertente e lunga discesa arriviamo a destinazione: la bella località di Santa Maria Navarrese. Pernotteremo in un hotel a tre stelle vicino alla spiaggia.

• Tag 2: Von Bari Sardo Bis Jerzu

  Die Fahrt beginnt am schönen Strand von Bari Sardo und nach ein paar flachen Kilometern beginnt der Anstieg in Richtung Jerzu, unserem Ziel, und einer kleinen Stadt, die den Geschmack des roten Cannonau-Weins im Mund der Weinkenner wachruft. Und der erste Teil der Etappe steigt auf Hängen an, die von diesen nach Osten ausgerichteten Weinbergen umgeben sind. Die mediterrane Vegetation aus kleinen Büschen macht bald Bäumen und Wäldern Platz, sobald wir uns Jerzu und Ulassai nähern. Ulassai ist ein großartiger Ort für ein Mittagessen oder einen erfrischenden Stopp. Wir fahren weiter durch das uralte Dorf Osini, das in den 50er Jahren überflutet wurde und seitdem immer noch in der Zeit liegt: es ist jetzt ein recht interessantes Geisterdorf. Von dort aus halten uns einige Kilometer auf unbefestigten Straßen und ein paar auf Singletrails in den Wäldern des Naturparks der Ogliastra-Gipfel, plus ein Aufstieg durch das Naturdenkmal Scala San Giorgio - eine tiefe, in den Sandstein gehauene Schlucht - von unserem Übernachtungsort fern: ein kleines familiengeführtes Hotel in den Bergen mit einem erstaunlichen Blick auf den Berg, den wir in den nächsten Tagen besteigen werden. • Tag 3: Von Jerzu Bis Seui

  Wir haben Wildnis versprochen, und das bekommen Sie an diesem Tag auch. Zwei kleine Punkte in den Bergen, verbunden durch eine 50 km lange kurvenreiche Strecke, die geschützte Wälder, Gipfel, alte Bahnlinien und Naturdenkmäler durchquert. Wir verlassen das Hotel und fahren bald in den Park der Ogliastra Peaks hinein, lassen die letzten Spuren der mediterranen Vegetation hinter uns und betreten das Innere Sardiniens und einen seiner berühmtesten Urwälder: Montarbu. Es handelt sich um ein 2800 Hektar großes, staatliches Territorium, das seit 1980 ein Naturschutzgebiet ist, in dem monumentale Steineichen stehen und in dem Damhirsche und Mufflons zu Hause sind. Über uns fliegen der Steinadler, der Habicht, der Mönchsgeier, der Wanderfalke, der Gänsegeier, der Milan, der Mäusebussard und der Sperber. Könnten wir sie verpassen? Vom höchsten Punkt dieses Mountainbiker-Paradieses steigen wir ab und nähern uns unserem Übernachtungsort. Ein kleiner, familiengeführter Agriturismo liegt in dieser traumhaften Kulisse. Gibt es etwas, das wir einem herrlichen Tag auf dem Rad hinzufügen können? Die natürliche Antwort wäre nein, aber wir sind im Herzen einer der ältesten Regionen Europas, also ja, sicher: ein Besuch der sehr interessanten Nuraghe Ardasai, ein 3000 Jahre altes Überbleibsel nur ein paar hundert Meter für den Agriturismo. • Tag 4: Von Seui Bis Belvì

  Wir fahren ein paar Kilometer in Richtung Süden, auf und ab auf die einsamen Gipfel der Gennargentu-Kette. Aber nach etwa 15 km beginnen wir einen langen Weg nach unten und verlieren etwa 700 Höhenmeter. Der letzte Abschnitt liegt im Schatten eines ziemlich dunklen Waldes. Diese Wälder sind einer der größten Trümpfe dieser Insel und bieten den besten Lebensraum für die autochthone sardische Tierwelt. Und bald treffen wir auf ein weiteres lebenswichtiges Element für die Insel: den Fluss Flumendosa, den größten und wichtigsten Wasserlauf, 127 km lang, der den gesamten südlichen Teil der Insel mit trinkbarem Wasser versorgt, das er in den Gennargentu-Bergen sammelt. Der Abstieg endet direkt in einer vom Fluss gegrabenen Schlucht, die wir durchqueren werden. Von dort aus geht es wieder bergauf und wir gewinnen an Höhe, bis wir uns unserem Ziel nähern: dem kleinen Bergstädtchen Belvì. Dorthin gelangen wir erst, nachdem wir auf einem erstaunlichen Singletrail gefahren sind, der um das Naturdenkmal Meseddu de Texile herumführt. Belvì ist ein winziges Dorf, das sich auf die Produktion von Berglebensmitteln und robustem Rotwein spezialisiert hat: eines der Geheimnisse, die die Lebenserwartung hier so hoch machen? Wir sind hier, um es zu entdecken. Gleich nach der Etappe können wir mit unseren Nachforschungen beginnen: Warum nicht etwas frisch hergestellten Nougat probieren, auf den sie in Belvì spezialisiert sind? • Tag 5: Von Belvì Bis Fonni

  Wir können nicht sagen, dass wir Gennargentu durchquert haben, wenn wir nicht auf dem Gipfel seines höchsten Berges fahren und von seiner West- zur Ostseite, die dem Meer zugewandt ist, wechseln. Das ist der Plan auf der vierten Etappe der Traverse. Nachdem wir Belvì verlassen haben, erreichen wir bald die Zwillingsstadt Aritzo und kürzen ab, um zum Tascusì-Pass aufzusteigen. Zum Pass fahren wir hinunter und wieder hinauf in ein wildes Tal im Girgini-Wald, einem weiteren sehr interessanten geschützten Wald. To central Sardinia Vom Pass aus beginnen wir eines der schönsten Abenteuer, die das Mountainbiken auf dieser Insel zu bieten hat: wir fahren über den Gipfel des Bruncu Spina, über 1830m ASL. Wir gelangen dorthin von der Südwestseite, entlang der Überreste der La Marmora-Hütte, einer Berghütte, die einst dem piemontesischen Entdecker Alberto La Marmora gewidmet war. Von dem Gebäude ist zwar nichts mehr übrig, aber von dort aus nehmen wir einen Singletrail, der uns auf den Gipfel führt. Wir sind sicher, dass Sie sich, wie jedes Mal, wenn wir dorthin fahren, sehr klein fühlen werden vor einem majestätischen Berg ohne jede Spur von menschlicher Anwesenheit und ohne sichtbare Pfade. Aber ein Berg, den wir überqueren müssen. Es ist eine Mischung aus Gefühlen: man wünscht sich, bald und sicher auf der anderen Seite zu sein, aber es ist - gleichzeitig - eine so verdammt schöne Ride, dass man nicht will, dass die Etappe endet. Oben angekommen, haben wir bei klarem Wetter einen fantastischen 360°-Blick, einschließlich des Meeres auf der Ost- und Westseite. Von dort führt uns ein schöner Singletrail wieder auf eine Schotterstraße und schließlich zum 3-Sterne hotel.

• Tag 6: Von Fonni Bis Orgosolo

  Dies ist eine lange Etappe der Reise a - 55km - und aus diesem Grund eine großartige Gelegenheit, eine so unglaublich unterschiedliche Landmorphologie, Vegetation und sogar Tierwelt kennenzulernen. Ein Tag, der uns mit einer früheren Werbung des Fremdenverkehrsamtes der Insel übereinstimmen lässt, die besagt, dass die Insel wie ein Kontinent ist. Wir verlassen den Agriturismo und fahren in die gleiche Richtung, aus der wir auf der vierten Etappe gekommen sind, aber wir weichen bald davon ab und fahren eine tiefe Schlucht hinunter, um zuerst einen einzelnen Pfad zu erwischen, dann eine Schotterstraße, die uns nach Osten führt, in Richtung der Berge des sehr wilden so genannten 'Supramonte von Urzulei'. Dies ist ein sehr eigenartiges Gebiet, geprägt von karstigem Hochland, in dem Flüsse tiefe Schluchten und Canyons geschaffen haben. Es gibt viele verschiedene 'Supromonte', jeder davon gehört zu einer Stadt oder einem Dorf. Sie alle sind eine sehr raue Umgebung zum Leben, aber ein Paradies für Mountainbiker. In der Vorgeschichte (als die Hirten noch nicht mit einem Pick-up zur Arbeit fuhren) waren sie dichter besiedelt, jetzt sind sie ein Königreich für Schafe, Ziegen, Hirten (eine Sache, die Jahrhunderte nicht ändern können)... und Mountainbiker. orgosolo and its mural paintings In der Mitte der Etappe betreten wir den Primärwald der Montes, die Wacholder machen nach und nach einem 4500 Hektar großen und jahrhundertealten Steineichenwald Platz, der in seiner Ausdehnung und seinen Eigenschaften einzigartig im Mittelmeerraum ist. Wir genießen es, eine Weile unter dem Schatten dieser riesigen Dreiergruppen zu fahren, bis wir unser Ziel erreichen: Orgosolo. Es gäbe viel über diese ikonische Stadt zu sagen. Sie werden die vielen Gesichter dieser Gegend entdecken, aber selbst eine schnelle Google-Suche wird zeigen, dass die Stadt für ihre erstaunlichen Wandmalereien weltberühmt ist. Der Muralismus, der immer noch aktiv ist, war im Ursprung ein Mittel des Protests. Kleine Gassen und Steinhäuser sind mit wunderschönen Gemälden geschmückt, die den Ort international bekannt gemacht haben. Viele Künstler haben dazu beigetragen, ein echtes Freilichtmuseum zu schaffen: Hunderte von Wandmalereien färben die Straßen und erzählen die Geschichte von Traditionen, Kultur und tiefem Dissens. Bars und Cafés, in Verbindung mit der typischen lokalen Gastfreundschaft, machen einen Besuch in der Stadt nicht nur interessant, sondern auch zutiefst genießbar. • Tag 7: Von Orgosolo Bis Cala Gonone

  Die längste Etappe der Traverse führt uns zurück ans Meer und das auf spektakuläre Art und Weise. Der erste Teil der Fahrt erkundet wieder den Montes-Wald, während wir südwärts auf dem Supramonte di Oliena fahren. Die größte Herausforderung bei der Gestaltung der gesamten Tour - und dieser letzten Etappe im Besonderen - ist die Überwindung des riesigen Kalksteinberges, der den Montes-Wald vom Marine-Supramonte (der Hochebene, die dem Meer an der zentralen Ostküste zugewandt ist) trennt. Es ist in der Tat eine sehr raue Umgebung und es gibt nur sehr wenige Wege hinüber, bei denen man nicht kilometerlang das Rad schieben muss, auch wenn man klettert. Die einzige Möglichkeit ist, nach Süden zu fahren und den Berg zu umrunden, und das bedeutet noch mehr Strecke. Nach dem Montes-Wald sind wir wieder auf dem Supramonte von Urzulei und durch das verschlungene Wegenetz kommen wir endlich wieder auf die 125 Statal-Straße. Genau an diesem Punkt haben wir eine gute Gelegenheit, unsere Batterien (von unseren Körpern und von den Fahrrädern, falls nötig) an einer netten Bar mit Aussicht wieder aufzuladen. Von dort aus geht es hinunter zum weltberühmten Strand Cala Luna, und zwar auf einer Straße, die enger wird, sobald wir uns dem Meer nähern. Die letzten Kilometer führen über einen tollen Singletrail. Am Ende ein kaltes Bier an der Bar, um das Ende eines tollen Ausflugs zu bejubeln. Ein paar Stunden am Strand, dann bringt uns eine Fährfahrt nach Cala Gonone, wo wir in einem 4-Sterne-Hotel übernachten.

• Day 1: Welcome to Sardinia

  Arrival at Cagliari airport and transfer to Bari Sardo. Accommodation at four-star hotel and welcome dinner.

• Day 2: From Barisardo to Jerzu

  The trip begins from the lovely beach of Bari Sardo and after a few kilometers on flat we start our climb towards Jerzu, our destination, and a small town that recalls the taste of red Cannonau wine in the mouth of the wine experts. The first part of the stage climbs up on slopes that are surrounded by these east-facing vineyards. The mediterranean chaparral made of small bushes will give way to trees and eventually forests as we approach Jerzu and Ulassai. Ulassai is a great spot for lunch or a refreshing stop. We keep riding across the ancient village of Osini, flooded in the 50s and frozen in time since then: it's now a quite interesting ghost village. From there, some kilometres on dirt roads and a few on single track in the woods of the Natural Park of the Ogliastra peaks, plus a climb through the natural monument of Scala San Giorgio - a deep canyon carved in the sandstone - that stands between us and our overnight location: a small family-run hotel in the mountains with an amazing view on the mountain we'll be climbing across over the next days. • Day 3: From Jerzu to Seui

  We promised wilderness, and that what you get on this day. Two small dots in the mountains connected by a 50km long winding line that crosses protected forests, peaks, old train lines and natural monuments. We leave the hotel and soon ride inside the Ogliastra Peaks park, leaving behind us the last traces of Mediterranean vegetation and entering inner Sardinia and one of its most famous and largest forests: Montarbu. It's a 2800 hectares, state-owned, territory, since 1980 wildlife reserve, that includes monumental olm oaks and it's home to fallow deer and mouflons. The golden eagle, the goshawk, the cinereous vulture, the peregrine falcon, the griffon vulture, the kite, the buzzard and the Eurasian sparrowhawk fly overhead. Could we be missing it? From the highest point of this mountain bikers paradise we descend and approach our overnight location. A small, family run agriturismo situated in this amazing setting. Is there something that we can add to a glorious day on the bike? While you might answer no, we in the heart of one of the most ancient European regions, so yes, sure: a visit to the very interesting Nuraghe Ardasai, a 3000 year old monument just a few hundred meters for the agriturismo. • Day 4: From Seui to Belvì

  We ride southwards for a few kilometers, up and down along the lonely peaks of the Gennargentu range. But after about 15km we start a long descent and lose about 700m elevation leading to segment covered by the shade of a dense dark forest. This forest is huge asset to the island, offering the ideal habitat for much of the autochtonous Sardinian wildlife. Soon we come to another vital element for the island: the Flumendosa river, the biggest and most important waterway, stretching 127km, it provides all the southern part of the island with drinkable water that it collects from the Gennargentu mountains. The descent ends in a canyon carved by the river. After crossing the river we begin to climb and regain much of the elevation we lost as we get close to our destination: the little mountain town of Belvì. We get there only after riding on an amazing bit of single track that bends around the natural monument of Meseddu de Texile. Belvì is a tiny village that specialises in the production of mountain food and robust red wine: one of the secrets that make the life expectancy so long here. While we are here we will try to discover the others. We can start our research right after the stage: why not start by tasting some fresh made nougat a specialty of Belvì? • Day 5: From Belvì to Fonni

  We can't say we've crossed Gennargentu until we ride up one of its tallest mountains. This is the plan on stage four of the Traverse. Leaving Belvì behind, before long we reach its sister town of Aritzo and soon after a short to climb towards the Tascusì pass. We get to the mountain pass riding into a wild valley inside the Girgini forest, another very interesting protected forest. From the mountain pass we begin one of the nicest adventures that mountain biking on this island can offer: going over the top of Bruncu Spina, over 1830m ASL. We get there from the south west side, along the remains of the La Marmora refuge, a mountain hut once dedicated to the Piedmontese explorer Alberto La Marmora. There's quite nothing left of the building, but from that very point we take a trail that will take us up top. We're sure you will, as it happens to us everytime we ride there, feel small as we ride up this majestic mountain without a trace of human presence. It's a mix of feelings: you want to quickly get up and over to the other side; but, at the same time, it is such a nice ride that you don't want the stage to end. Once on top, with clear skies, we'll have an amazing 360 view, including the sea to the east and west. From there, a nice section of single track will lead us to a dirt road and eventually to the accommodation in Fonni at three-star hotel.

• Day 6: From Fonni to Orgosolo

  This is on of the longer stages of the trip - 55 km - and because of this great opportunity to experience the incredibly varied land morphology, vegetation, and wildlife. A day that makes us agree with a past advertising of the island's tourist board saying the island is like a continent. We leave the agriturismo and ride up in the same direction we came from on stage four, but we soon divert and go down a deep canyon to ride some single track, this leads to a dirt road that takes us to the east, towards the mountains of the very wild 'Supramonte of Urzulei'. This is a very peculiar area, characterized by Karstic highlands through which rivers have created deep ravines and canyons. The Supramonte range is subdivided into areas each named for a town or village. Theentire range is a harsh environment for living, but a paradise for mountain biking. In the prehistory (when shepherds didn't drive a pick up truck to go work), they were more densely populated, now they're kingdom for sheep, goats, shepherds (a thing that centuries can't change)... and the most recent addition us mountain bikers. In the middle of the stage we enter the Montes primary forest, as the junipers lgive way to a 4500 hectares centuries-old holm oak forest, unique in the Mediterranean basin for its size and characteristics. We enjoy riding under the shade of these giant threes for a while, until we get to our destination: Orgosolo. There is much to say about this iconic town, but even a quick Google search will reveal that the town is world famous for its amazing mural painings. Muralism, is still active and at the origin it was a tool of protest. Little lanes and stone houses are enriched by beautiful paintings, which have made the village internationally known. Many artists have contributed to the creation of a real outdoor museum: hundreds of murals color the streets and tell the stories of traditions, culture and deep dissent. Bars and cafes, in conjunction with the typical local hospitality, make a visit in town not only interesting, but also deeply enjoyable. Accommodation at a 3-star hotel in town.

• Day 7: From Orgosolo to Cala Gonone

  The longest stage of the Traverse will take us back to the sea and it does it in a spectacular way. The first part of the ride allows us to once more explore the Montes forest, while we ride southwards on the Supramonte di Oliena. The biggest challenge in designing this tour - and this last stage in particular - is getting past the huge limestone mountain that separates the Montes forest from the Marine Supramonte (the plateau that faces the sea on the central east coast). It is, in fact, a very harsh environment and there are very few ways across that don't involve walking for kilometres pushing the bike. The only rideable path takes us south to go around the mountain. After the Montes forest we're back on the Supramonte of Urzulei where we use an intricate network of trails that eventually reconnect to the 125 state road. Here we have a great opportunity to recharge our batteries (of our bodies and of the bikes, if needed) at a nice bar with view. From there, the trend is going down towards the world famous Cala Luna beach trough a road that becomes tighter as we get close to the sea. The last few kilometres are on an amazing stretch of single track. At the end of it, a cold beer at the bar to cheer the end of a great trip. A few hours on the beach, then a ferry ride will take us to Cala Gonone, where we stay overnight at a 4-star hotel.

• Giorno 2: Da Bari Sardo a Jerzu

  Il viaggio inizia dalla bella spiaggia di Bari Sardo e dopo pochi chilometri in pianura iniziamo la nostra salita verso Jerzu, la nostra meta. Si tratta di un piccolo paese che ricorda il sapore del famoso vino rosso Cannonau agli esperti del vino. E la prima parte della tappa si inerpica su pendii che sono circondati da questi vigneti esposti a est. La vegetazione mediterranea fatta di piccoli cespugli fa presto spazio ad alberi e boschi non appena ci avviciniamo a Jerzu e Ulassai. Ulassai è un ottimo posto per il pranzo o per una sosta rinfrescante. Continuiamo a pedalare attraverso l'antico villaggio di Osini, inondato negli anni '50 e abbandonato da allora: oggi è un villaggio fantasma piuttosto interessante. Da lì, alcuni chilometri su strade sterrate e alcuni su single trail nei boschi del Parco Naturale delle vette dell'Ogliastra, più una salita attraverso il monumento naturale della Scala San Giorgio - un profondo canyon scavato nell'arenaria - ci separano dal nostro luogo di pernottamento: un piccolo albergo a conduzione familiare sui monti con una splendida vista sulla montagna che scaleremo nei prossimi giorni. • Giorno 3: Da Jerzu a Seui

  Abbiamo promesso la natura selvaggia, e questo ci godremo in questo giorno. Due piccoli punti in montagna collegati da una linea sinuosa lunga 50 km che attraversa foreste protette, cime, vecchie linee ferroviarie e monumenti naturali. Lasciamo l'albergo e presto pedaliamo all'interno del parco dei Tacchi d'Ogliastra, lasciandoci alle spalle le ultime tracce di vegetazione mediterranea ed entrando nell'interno della Sardegna interna e in una delle sue più famose foreste primarie: Montarbu. E' un territorio di 2800 ettari, di proprietà dello Stato, dal 1980 riserva faunistica, che comprende monumentali querce olmiche e ospita daini e mufloni. Sopra di essa volano l'aquila reale, l'astore, l'avvoltoio cinerino, il falco pellegrino, il grifone, l'aquila, la poiana e lo sparviero eurasiatico. Potremmo mai evitare di attraversarlo? Dal punto più alto di questo paradiso per gli amanti della mountain bike scendiamo e ci avviciniamo alla nostra posizione di pernottamento. Un piccolo agriturismo a conduzione familiare che si trova in questo fantastico scenario. C'è qualcosa che possiamo aggiungere a una giornata gloriosa in bicicletta? La risposta naturale sarebbe 'no', ma siamo nel cuore di una delle più antiche regioni europee, quindi sì, certo: una visita all'interessantissimo nuraghe Ardasai, un nuraghe di 3000 anni, che l'agriturismo rimane a poche centinaia di metri dall'agriturismo. • Giorno 4: Da Seui a Belvì

  Pedaliamo verso sud per alcuni chilometri, su e giù sulle solitarie cime del Gennargentu. Ma dopo circa 15 km iniziamo una lunga discesa e perdiamo circa 700 metri di quota. L'ultimo segmento è all'ombra di una fitta e scura foresta. Queste foreste sono uno dei più grandi patrimoni di quest'isola, offrendo il miglior habitat per la fauna autoctona sarda. E presto incontreremo un altro elemento vitale per l'isola: il fiume Flumendosa, il più grande e importante corso d'acqua, lungo 127 km, che fornisce a tutta la parte meridionale dell'isola l'acqua potabile che raccoglie dai monti del Gennargentu. La discesa termina proprio in un canyon scavato dal fiume, che attraverseremo. Da lì risaliamo e riprendiamo quota mentre ci avviciniamo alla nostra meta: il paesino di montagna di Belvì. Ci arriviamo solo dopo aver percorso un fantastico single trail che gira intorno al monumento naturale di Meseddu de Texile. Belvì è un piccolo villaggio specializzato nella produzione di cibi di montagna e di vini rossi robusti: uno dei segreti che rendono così lunga l'aspettativa di vita qui su? Siamo qui per scoprirlo. Possiamo iniziare la nostra ricerca subito dopo la tappa: perché non assaggiare del torrone fresco di cui sono specialisti a Belvì? Alloggio e cena in un hotel a 3 stelle in città.

• Giorno 5: Da Belvì a Fonni

  Non possiamo dire di aver attraversato il Gennargentu fino a quando non abbiamo pedalato fno ed oltre la cima della sua montagna più alta che va da ovest a est, che si affaccia sul mare. Questo è il piano della quarta tappa del Traverse. Lasciato Belvì, raggiungiamo in breve tempo il paese gemello di Aritzo e tagliamo per salire verso il passo del Tascusì. Raggiungiamo il passo scendendo e risalendo una valle selvaggia all'interno del bosco di Girgini, un altro bosco protetto molto interessante. Dal passo iniziamo una delle più belle avventure che la mountain bike su quest'isola può offrire: superare la cima di Bruncu Spina, oltre 1830m ASL. Ci arriviamo dal versante sud ovest, dove sono ancora visibili i resti del rifugio La Marmora, un tempo dedicato all'esploratore piemontese Alberto La Marmora. Non rimane nulla dell'edificio, ma proprio da quel punto prendiamo un unico sentiero che ci porterà in cima. Siamo sicuri che vi sentirete, come accade ogni volta che ci andiamo, molto piccoli davanti a una montagna maestosa, senza indizi di presenza umana e senza segni di sentieri visibili. Ma una montagna che dobbiamo attraversare. È davvero un mix di sentimenti: vorresti essere presto al sicuro dall'altra parte, ma è - allo stesso tempo - una tappa così dannatamente bella che non vorrsti che finisse. Una volta in cima, se la giornata è limpida, avremo una vista a 360 gradi, compreso il mare sia a est che a ovest. Sistemazione in hotel 3 stelle al centro di Fonni.

• Giorno 6: Da Fonni a Orgosolo

  Questa è una lunga tappa del nostro viaggio - 55 km - e per questo motivo è una grande opportunità per incontrare una morfologia del terreno così incredibilmente variabile, come anche la vegetazione e perfino la fauna selvatica. Una giornata che ci fa concordare in pieno con una vecchia pubblicità dell'Ente locale del turismo che diceva che l'isola è come un continente. Lasciamo l'agriturismo e saliamo nella stessa direzione in cui siamo arrivati dalla quarta tappa, ma presto deviamo per scendere in un profondo canyon e prendere prima un single trail, poi una strada sterrata che ci porta ad est, verso le montagne del cosiddetto 'Supramonte di Urzulei'. Si tratta di una zona molto particolare, caratterizzata da altipiani carsici in cui i fiumi hanno creato profonde gole e canyon. Ci sono molti 'Supromonte' diversi, ognuno dei quali appartiene a un paese o a un villaggio. Sono tutti ambienti molto difficili da vivere, ma un paradiso per la mountain bike. Nella preistoria (quando i pastori non guidavano un pick-up per andare al lavoro), erano più densamente popolati, ora sono il regno delle pecore, delle capre, dei pastori (cosa che i secoli non possono cambiare)... e dei ciclisti in mountain bike. Al centro della tappa entriamo nella foresta primaria di Montes, i ginepri lasciano progressivamente spazio a un bosco di 4500 ettari e a una foresta di lecci secolari, unica nel bacino del Mediterraneo per estensione e caratteristiche. Ci piace pedalare all'ombra di questi alberi giganti per un po' di tempo, fino alla nostra destinazione: Orgosolo. Ci sarebbe molto da dire su questa città iconica. Scoprirete i tanti volti di questo territorio, ma anche una rapida ricerca su Google vi rivelerà che la città è famosa in tutto il mondo per le sue incredibili pitture murali. Il muralismo, è ancora attivo ed all'origine era uno strumento di protesta. Piccoli vicoli e case in pietra sono arricchiti da bellissimi dipinti, che hanno reso il paese famoso a livello internazionale. Molti artisti hanno contribuito alla creazione di un vero e proprio museo all'aperto: centinaia di murales colorano le strade e raccontano la storia delle tradizioni, della cultura e del dissenso. Bar e caffè, in combinazione con la tipica ospitalità locale, rendono la visita in città non solo interessante, ma anche profondamente piacevole. Sistemazione in un hotel a 3 stelle in città.

• Giorno 7: Da Orgosolo a Cala Gonone

  La tappa più lunga della Traversata ci riporterà al mare e lo farà in modo spettacolare. La prima parte della tappa esplora di nuovo la foresta di Montes, pedalando verso sud sul Supramonte di Oliena. La sfida più grande nel progettare l'intero tour - e quest'ultima tappa in particolare - è passare davanti all'enorme montagna calcarea che separa la foresta di Montes dal Supramonte marino (l'altopiano che si affaccia sul mare della costa centro-orientale). Si tratta, infatti, di un ambiente molto aspro e ci sono pochissimi modi di attraversare che non prevedono di camminare per chilometri spingendo la bici, anche in salita. L'unica possibilità è pedalare verso sud e fare il giro della montagna, e questo aggiunge un po' di distanza in più. Dopo la foresta di Montes siamo di nuovo sul Supramonte di Urzulei e attraverso l'intricata rete di sentieri ci ricongiungiamo finalmente alla Statale 125. Proprio in quel punto abbiamo una grande opportunità di ricaricare le batterie (del nostro corpo e delle moto, se necessario) in un bel bar con vista. Da lì, la tendenza è quella di scendere verso la famosa spiaggia di Cala Luna attraverso una strada che diventa più stretta non appena ci avviciniamo al mare. Gli ultimi chilometri sono su un fantastico single trail. Alla fine del quale, ci saremo meritati (almeno) una birra fredda al bar per festeggiare la fine di un grande viaggio. Qualche ora sulla spiaggia, poi in traghetto fino a Cala Gonone, dove pernotteremo in un hotel a 4 stelle.

• Giorno 2: Da Arzachena a Castelsardo

  Dalla Costa Smeralda, si pedala tra le colline del nord Sardegna, e passando per i famosi paesaggi della valle di Aggius, per giungere alla città medievale di Castelsardo. Questa è una città storica molto ben conservata, arroccata com'è sulla cima di un promontorio a picco sul mare che l'ha salvaguardata dagli attacchi dei pirati nel corso dei secoli. Oggi Castelsardo è una famosa meta turistica, con tutti i servizi possibili a disposizione del viaggiatore. C'è un porto turistico, belle spiagge e piccole insenature ideali per una piacevole vacanza estiva. Ma riti e tradizioni come la famosa Festa di Lunissanti segnano la vita quotidiana della città, caratterizzata dal lavoro di cestai, pescatori e agricoltori. Castelsardo ti piacerà! Si comincia pedalando in direzione ovest su una bella strada costiera, molto vicino alle spiagge del Golfo dell'Asinara. Alcuni chilometri dopo Porto Torres, il principale insediamento industriale nel nord Sardegna, si cambia direzione e si punta verso sud. Prima di arrivare ad Alghero, si può godere la vista magica offerta dal Argentiera, dal Parco Regionale di Porto Conte e da Capo Caccia, un'area marina protetta. • Giorno 4: Da Alghero a Santu Lussurgiu

  In questa tappa potrete sperimentare lo speciale legame che unisce paesaggi costieri e montani della Sardegna. Si parte da Alghero e si pedala verso sud per giungere a Bosa su una delle strade costiere più conosciute della Sardegna. Il borgo medievale qui è uno dei meglio conservati dell'isola. Ed è sicuramente da visitare. Val la pena godersi una passeggiata indimenticabile attraverso i vicoli della città vecchia. E, perchè no, fermarsi per un pasto veloce all'interno della città vecchia. Semplicemente speciale! Bosa è il luogo in cui ci si lascia il mare alle spalle. Una lunga salita nelle montagne interne della Sardegna occidentale, vi porta alla storica città di Santu Lussurgiu. • Giorno 5: Da Santu Lussurgiu a Fonni

  Questa è una vera tappa di montagna. Il percorso sale nella Sardegna centrale, fino alla rinomata località montana di Aritzo. Dopo 30 km, si entra nella famosa regione della Sardegna chiamata Barbagia, la più selvaggia dell'isola, inaccessibile per migliaia di anni, e, per questo motivo, un'area in cui le tradizioni e il vero orgoglio della Sardegna sono molto forti. Si può quasi respirare ed è una atmosfera da non perdere. Qui, si pedala attraverso borghi molto piccoli, come Neoneli, famosa per i Tenores di Neoneli. Si tratta di un quartetto maschile che canta il cosiddetto 'Su cantu a tenòre', una tipologa di canto tradizionale polifonico caratteristico della Barbagia e che oggi fa orgogliosamente parte della Lista del Patrimonio Culturale Immateriale dell'UNESCO. Più si sale, più ci si addentra nella tradizione sarda. Ad esempio, si passa attraverso Tonara, un villaggio famoso per la produzione di delizioso torrone. Il torrone sardo è conosciuto e amato da molti per il suo gusto delizioso e gli ingredienti naturali di alta qualità. Le calorie sono ciò di cui si ha realmente bisogno in questa parte del viaggio. • Giorno 6: Da Fonni a Cala Gonone

  Lasciato Fonni, pedaliamo verso sud e presto raggiungiamo la cima del passo di Correboi - 1250m slm e prendiamo una lunghissima discesa su una strada molto tranquilla e panoramica che ci farà lasciare per un po' la Barbagia e ci avvicinerà alle incontaminate montagne dell'Ogliastra. Pieghiamo decisamente verso la costa e dopo un bel saliscendi, prendiamo un'altra lunghissima e tortuosa discesa con una vista spettacolare sulla costa sud-orientale. Impossibile andare veloci qui: ogni singolo tornante richiede una foto! La cittadina di Talana è una buona occasione per fermarsi a prendere un caffè prima di svoltare a sinistra e proseguire verso la famosa SS125, l'antica - iconica - strada che un tempo era l'unico collegamento tra sud e nord-est. Ora abbiamo strade più veloci per connettere le due estremità dell'isola, e la SS125 è diventata il paradiso dei ciclisti. Scoprirete il perché. Al termine di un'altra lunga discesa sulla SS125, giriamo a destra e giù di nuovo verso la meta: la località turistica di Cala Gonone. È ora di fare una nuotata! • Giorno 7: Da Cala Gonone a Bitti

  C'è un modo spettacolare per uscire dal golfo di Cala Gonone. E come nella vita, le cose belle non sono cose facili: bisogna risalire la vecchia strada, in qualche tratto ripida e col fondo ruvido - diremmo pre-turistica - scavata nel calcare bianco. Duretta, ma così bella che siamo sicuri che non ci biasimerete per questo. Attraversiamo di nuovo la SS125, ma continuiamo a pedalare verso Galtellì. Una sosta in quel paese, con il suo splendido centro storico, ci farà immergere nella storia dell'isola. Galtellì è stata premiata dal Touring Club Italiano con la bandiera arancione per l'eccellenza. Le vie del centro storico, le sue tradizioni e le sue sensazioni hanno ispirato l'autrice e premio Nobel Grazia Deledda quando ha ambientato lì il suo libro Canne al Vento. Poco dopo Galtellì si prende la salita principale della giornata, attraversando altri tipici borghi come Lula e Orani, e si raggiunge la meta giornaliera: Bitti. • Giorno 8: Da Bitti a Olbia

  Spero che la scheda di memoria del vostro smartphone abbia ancora un po' di spazio, perché questa giornata vi darà molte grandi opportunità per degli splendidi scatti. Si pedala verso nord per chiudere il nostro Circle e fin dall'inizio il paesaggio è stupendo: si pedala lungo la vastissima fascia calcarea - straordinariamente bianca - del Monte Albo. Molte delle cime del bastione calcareo sono alte più di mille metri; la macchia mediterranea è tutta intorno ed è sempreverde. Dopo una lunga discesa, troveremo la valle del lago di Torpè e oggi un'oasi naturalistica: quasi ottomila ettari di boschi incontaminati, sentieri, sorgenti, fiumi e "dune" nel territorio di Bitti, Lodè, Posada e Torpè. Altre strade collinari ci condurranno all'ultima - finale - discesa verso Olbia al termine di un viaggio impegnativo e indimenticabile! Pernottamento in un hotel a quattro stelle.

• Day 1: Welcome to Sardinia

  Arrival in Olbia, transfer to accommodation in Arzachena. Dinner at a four star hotel.

• Day 2: From Arzachena to Castelsardo

  From Costa Smeralda, riding along the hills of northern Sardinia, and passing through the famous landscapes of the Aggius valley, you come to the medieval town of Castelsardo. This is a very well preserved historical city, thanks to the fact that it’s perched atop a promontory high above the sea that has protected it from attacks and destruction over the centuries. Today, Castelsardo is a well-known tourist destination with all the services imaginable available for you. There’s a marina and beautiful beaches and small inlets perfect for a pleasant summer holiday. But rituals and traditions such as the famous Festa di Lunissanti mark the everyday life of the town, characterized by the industrious work of basket-weavers, fishermen, and farmers. You’ll love it! • Day 3: From Castelsardo to Alghero

  Alghero is another medieval town, and an extremely interesting one. And that's your destination today. This time you ride westwards on the beautiful coastal road very close to the beautiful and outstretched beaches of the Asinara Gulf. Some kilometers after Porto Torres, the main industrial settlement in the north, you change direction and ride southwards. Before arriving in Alghero, you can take in the magical views offered by the Argentiera and the Porto Conte Regional Park as well as enjoy Capo Caccia, a protected the marine area. This is a stage with a lot to see! Accommodation in a three star hotel.

• Day 4: From Alghero to Santu Lussurgiu

  On this stage, you’ll experience the special connection between the coastline and mountains in Sardinia. You start from Alghero and ride south to Bosa on one of the most renowned coastal roads on Sardinia. The medieval village here is one of the best preserved on the island. And it’s worth visiting. Enjoy an unforgettable ride through the narrow streets and stop for a quick meal in the heart of this old town. It's simply special. Bosa is the place where you leave the sea behind you. A long climb into the inner mountains of western Sardinia takes you to the historical city of Santu Lussurgiu. A Sardinian traditional dinner awaits us. Accommodation and dinner in a three star hotel.

• Day 5: From Santu Lussurgiu to Fonni

  This is a real mountain stage. It takes you up to the highest mountain village in Sardinia. After 30 km, you enter the wildest area of Sardinia, called Barbagia. This region is considered the heart of the island, for thousands of years it is here Sardinians took refuge from the invasions of other mediterranean cultures, and an area where tradition and true Sardinian pride live on. You can almost breathe it and you shouldn’t miss it. Here, you ride through very small villages such as Neoneli, famous for the Neoneli’s tenors. This is a male quartet which sings the so called 'Su cantu a tenòre', a style of polyphonic folk singing characteristic of the Barbagia region and today it's a proud member of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. The more you climb, the deeper you get into Sardinian tradition. For instance, you pass through Tonara, a village famous for the production of delicious Torrone nougat. Sardinian nougat is known and loved by many for its delicious taste and top-quality natural ingredients. Fortunately, you will need some extra calories at this stage of the trip. From Tonara we climb up Tascusì pass topping out at 1250m. Your legs will get a well earned respite on the descent before the last hill on the way to Fonni, where we overnight. • Day 6: From Fonni to Cala Gonone

  Leaving Fonni, we ride southwards and soon we climb over Correboi pass (1250m) and head down a long descent on a quiet and panoramic road that will take us briefly out of the Barbagia region. As we approach to the very wild Ogliastra mountains we bend decidedly towards the coastline and after a lovely up and down section, we take another super long and winding descent with a spectacular view of the southeastern coastline. It is impossible to go quick here: every hairpin calls for a photo! The small town of Talana is a good opportunity for a coffee stop before we turn left and ride towards the SS125, the ancient and iconic road that once was the only connection between south and northeast. Now we have quicker roads to do the job, and the SS125 is a cyclists paradise. You'll discover why. At the end of another long descent on the SS125, we find our destination: the tourist resort of Cala Gonone. Time to take a swim! Accommodation in a four-star hotel.

• Day 7: From Cala Gonone to Bitti

  There's a spectacular way to get out of the Cala Gonone cove, however, as in life, the best things seldom come easy. We need to climb up a steep old road carved into the white limestone. After this tuff start your legs will get some time to recover. We will cross the SS125 again on our way to Galtellì. A stop here is like looking back in time. Galtellì has been awarded the Touring Club Italiano’s orange flag rating for excellence. The streets of the old town centre, its traditions and sensations helped inspire Nobel Prize winning author Grazia Deledda when she wrote her book Canne al Vento. Quite soon after Galtellì we encounter the main climb of the day before passing through two typical Sardinian villages Lula and Orani. Shortly after Orani we will reach the daily destination: Bitti. Dinner and overnight at a four-star hotel.

• Day 8: From Bitti to Olbia

  Hopefully your smartphone's memory card still has some space left, as today will give you plenty of great photo opportunities. You ride to the north to close the Circle. Right from the beginning the scenery is gorgeous: you'll ride along the very large limestone and extraordinarily white range of Monte Albo. Many of the peaks of the limestone bastion are over a thousand metres high; Mediterranean scrub is all around and evergreen. After a long descent, you'll find the valley of the Torpè lake. Contained within a the Tepilora Regional Nature Park: almost eight thousand hectares of unspoilt forests, trails, springs, rivers and ‘dunes’. After some more hilly roads the final descent, of this challenging and unforgettable tour, brings you to Olbia. Overnight at a four-star hotel.

• Tag 2: Von Arzachena Bis Castelsardo

  Von der bekannten Costa Smeralda radelt man über die Hügel Nordsardiniens in westliche Richtung entlang der Dörfer des Valle di Aggius, bevor man die mittelalterliche Stadt Castelsardo an der Nordküste Sardiniens erreicht. Die hstorische Stadt ist außerordentlich gut erhalten und thront auf einem Felssporn, direkt über dem Meer. • Tag 3: Von Castelsardo Bis Alghero

  Auf einer schönen Küstenstraße geht es westwärts, immer in der Nähe der schönen Strände des Golfo dell’Asinara. Wir erreichen Porto Torres und mit ihm den ersten Industriekomplex Sardiniens, ehe wir uns nun nach Süden ins Inselinnere wenden. Bevor wir bei Alghero wieder die Westküste erreichen, können wir vom Monte Argentiera eine magische Aussicht genießen, die vom Regionalpark von Porto Conte bis zum Capo Caccia reicht, einer geschützten marinen Zone. Es ist eine Etappe, auf der es sehr viel zu sehen gibt. Auch unser Ziel Alghero ist eine faszinierende, mittelalterliche Stadt. Übernachtung in einem Hotel.

• Tag 4: Von Alghero Bis Santu Lussurgiu

  Auf dieser Etappe erfahrt ihr das spezielle Verhältnis, das die Küstengegenden mit den Bergregionen Sardiniens verbindet. Man verläst Alghero in südliche Richtung und radelt auf einer der schönsten und bekanntesten Küstenstraßen bis nach Bosa. Der mittelalterliche Ortskern ist sehr gut erhalten und die verwinkelten Gassen der Altstadt sind unbedingt einen Bummel wert und weil es gerade so schön ist, gönnt man sich noch eine Mahlzeit in einem der vielen Straßenlokale. Anschließend wenden wir der Küste den Rücken zu und müssen noch eine lange Steigung in die Hügel der westsardischen Bergkette bewältigen, die uns zum historischen Städtchen Santu Lussurgiu bringt. Ein traditionelles sardisches Festmahl erwartet uns in unserem Hotel. Übernachtung.

• Tag 5: Von Santu Lussurgiu Bis Fonni

  Wenn ein Tagespensum das Prädikat Bergetappe verdient hat, dann das heutige. Die Strecke führt ins Innere der Insel, in die abgeschiedene Bergregion der Barbagia. Schon nach etwa 30 Kilometern erreichen wir diese wilde, in vergangenen Zeiten weithin gefürchtete Gegend. Weil die Region über tausende von Jahren praktisch unzugänglich war, haben sich hier Traditionen und sardischer Stolz besonders stark entwickelt und erhalten. Diese unverwechselbare Stimmung kann man noch heute quasi einatmen. Man passiert kleine Bergdörfer, wie beispielsweise Neoneli, das wegen seiner Tenöre berühmt geworden ist. Dabei handelt es sich um ein Gesangsquartett, das den sogenannten „Su cantu a tenòre“ anstimmt, einen für die Barbagia typischen polyphonen Viergesang, der zum Stolz seiner Bewahrer sogar von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt wurde. Unser heutiges Tagesziel heißt Fonni und je höher wir kommen, desto tiefer dringen wir in die sardische Tradition ein. Dazu gehört auch die Herstellung des wohlschmeckenden „Torrone“ von Tonara, einer auf natürlichen Zutaten basierenden und daher besonders hochwertigen Süßspeise auf Nougatbasis. • Tag 6: Von Fonni Bis Cala Gonone

  Von Fonni aus fahren wir in Richtung Süden und schon bald erklimmen wir den Correboi-Pass - 1250m ü.d.M. und begeben uns auf eine sehr lange Abfahrt auf einer sehr ruhigen und panoramareichen Straße, die uns für eine Weile die Barbagia-Region verlassen lässt und sich den sehr wilden Ogliastra-Bergen nähert. Wir biegen entschlossen in Richtung Küste ab, und nach einem schönen Auf und Ab nehmen wir eine weitere superlange und kurvenreiche Abfahrt mit einem spektakulären Blick auf die südöstliche Küstenlinie. Unmöglich, hier schnell zu fahren: jede einzelne Haarnadel schreit nach einem Foto! Die kleine Stadt Talana ist eine gute Gelegenheit für einen Kaffeestopp, bevor wir links abbiegen und in Richtung der berühmten SS125 fahren, der alten - ikonischen - Straße, die einst die einzige Verbindung zwischen Süden und Nordosten war. Jetzt gibt es schnellere Straßen, die diese Aufgabe übernehmen, und die SS125 ist ein Paradies für Radfahrer. Sie werden sehen, warum. Am Ende einer weiteren langen Abfahrt auf der SS125, nach rechts und wieder hinunter zum Ziel: dem Touristenort Cala Gonone. Zeit zum Schwimmen! Unterkunft in einem Vier-Sterne-Hotel.

• Tag 7: Von Cala Gonone Bis Bitti

  Es gibt einen spektakulären Weg, um aus der Bucht Cala Gonone herauszukommen. Und wie viele schöne Dinge sind die Dinge nicht einfach: Sie müssen die alte, irgendwie steile und klebrige - wir würden sagen, prätouristische - Straße hinaufklettern, die in den weißen Kalkstein gehauen ist. Aber es ist so schön, dass Sie uns das sicher nicht übel nehmen werden. Wir überqueren wieder die SS125, fahren aber weiter in Richtung Galtellì. Ein Stopp in diesem Ort mit seiner tollen Altstadt lässt uns in die Geschichte der Insel eintauchen. Galtellì wurde vom Touring Club Italiano mit der orangefarbenen Flagge ausgezeichnet. Die Gassen der Altstadt, ihre Traditionen und Sensationen inspirierten die Schriftstellerin und Nobelpreisträgerin Grazia Deledda zu ihrem Buch "Canne al Vento". Schon bald nach Galtellì nehmen wir den Hauptanstieg des Tages in Angriff, durchqueren weitere typische Dörfer wie Lula und Orani und erreichen das Tagesziel: Bitti. Sie fahren nach Norden, um den Kreis zu schließen, und gleich zu Beginn ist die Landschaft traumhaft: Sie fahren entlang der sehr großen - außergewöhnlich weißen - Kalksteinkette des Monte Albo. Viele der Gipfel der Kalksteinbastion sind über tausend Meter hoch; rundherum ist mediterrane Macchia und immergrün. • Tag 2: Von Alghero Bis Santu Lussurgiu

  Auf der Eröffnungsetappe erleben Sie die besondere Verbindung zwischen Küsten- und Bergfahrten auf Sardinien. Sie starten in Alghero und fahren auf einer der bekanntesten Küstenstraßen Sardiniens in Richtung Süden nach Bosa. Das mittelalterliche Dorf hier ist eines der am besten erhaltenen auf der Insel. Und es ist einen Besuch wert. Genießen Sie eine unvergessliche Fahrt durch die engen Gassen der Altstadt. Und ein Stopp für eine schnelle Mahlzeit innerhalb der Altstadt ist einfach etwas Besonderes. Bosa ist auch der Ort, an dem Sie das Meer hinter sich lassen. Die Anfahrt erfolgt durch die sanften Hügel der Nurra-Region, hinauf nach Cuglieri. Von dort aus führt ein langer Anstieg in die Berge von Montiferru zu dem kleinen Juwel namens Santu Lussurgiu, einer kleinen mittelalterlichen Stadt, wo ein traditionelles sardisches Abendessen und eine sehr komfortable Unterkunft auf Sie warten.

• Tag 3: Von Santu Lussurgiu Bis Fonni

  Wir werden tief in den Kern Sardiniens fahren, in die Region, die Barbagia genannt wird: ein Gebiet Sardiniens, das am wenigsten Einfluss von außen hatte und daher - mit Stolz - seine starken Traditionen bewahrt. Die Etappe ist in zwei verschiedene Teile aufgeteilt. Die erste Hälfte ist recht einfach: am Anfang geht es bergab, dann wird es flacher, während wir uns in Richtung Inselmitte und nach Osten bewegen. Der zweite Teil ist viel schwieriger: nach der Brücke über den Tirso-See beginnen wir eine Reihe von langen und progressiven Anstiegen, die uns vom westlichen zum zentralen Teil des Gennargentu-Gebirges innerhalb der Barbagia-Region führen. Wir fahren durch viele kleine und beschauliche Dörfer, während wir uns den wichtigsten Zentren der Barbagia nähern, wie Tonara - bekannt für das hervorragende Nougat-Handwerk - und schließlich Fonni, ein Winterurlaubsort im Herzen einer Mittelmeerinsel. • Tag 4: Von Fonni Bis Posada

  Wir verlassen Fonni und fahren in Richtung Norden zum Hauptort von Zentralsardinien und einer der Verwaltungshauptstädte: Nuoro. Die ersten 50 km haben eine absteigende Tendenz und auch mit einigen guten Anstiegen darin, verliert man etwa 1000 Höhenmeter. Von dort aus nehmen wir den ersten der beiden Hauptanstiege des Tages: 12 Kilometer nach Orune, und zuletzt ein beeindruckender Anstieg entlang der - außerordentlich weißen - Molte Albo Bergkette. Viele der Gipfel dieser berühmten Kalksteinbastion sind über tausend Meter hoch; rundherum ist mediterrane Macchia und immergrün. Nach einem langen Abstieg finden Sie das Tal des Torpè-Sees und heute eine Parkoase: fast achttausend Hektar unberührte Wälder, Wanderwege, Quellen, Flüsse und "Dünen" im Gebiet von Bitti, Lodè, Posada. Posada ist ein weiterer historischer Ort mit einer schönen Altstadt und einer der am besten erhaltenen mittelalterlichen Festungen Sardiniens - Castello della Fava - die sich im Ort erhebt und von alten Geheimnissen und Legenden umgeben ist. Sieht erstaunlich aus, nicht wahr? Deshalb ist Posada auch der Ort, wo wir für Sie eine Unterkunft in einem Drei-Sterne-Hotel arrangiert haben.

• Tag 5: Von Posada Bis Santa Maria Navarrese

  Wir verlassen Posada und fahren auf einem sehr leichten ersten Teil der Etappe in Richtung Süden. Wir durchqueren die Dörfer Irgoli und Galtellì. Ein Stopp in der beeindruckenden Altstadt lässt uns in die Geschichte der Insel eintauchen. Galtellì wurde vom Touring Club Italiano mit der orangefarbenen Flagge ausgezeichnet. Die Gassen der Altstadt, ihre Traditionen und Sensationen inspirierten die Schriftstellerin und Nobelpreisträgerin Grazia Deledda zu ihrem Buch "Canne al Vento". Nach einem guten Cappuccino, fahren wir weiter in Richtung Süden und nehmen gleich nach Dorgali den Hauptanstieg des Tages in Angriff: Er ist etwa 20 km lang und führt uns auf den Genna Silana Pass. Bereits Etappen-KOM des Giro d'Italia 2017. To central Sardinia Die Erwähnung ist nicht zufällig: da 150 Profi-Fahrer diesen Anstieg gefahren sind, noch dazu an einem Tag mit superstarkem Rückenwind, macht jeder Versuch, einen Rekord zu brechen - zur Freude der Strava-Follower - einen massiven Unsinn. Von jeglicher Schnelligkeit abgesehen, halten wir unser Tempo und genießen sogar unbeschwert einen Verpflegungsstopp direkt vor der Gorropu-Schlucht, der tiefsten Schlucht in Europa. Eine rasante Abfahrt bringt uns zurück an die Küste, nach Santa Maria Navarrese. Ein weiterer herrlicher Radtag endet in einer komfortablen Unterkunft in einem Drei-Sterne-Hotel.

• Tag 6: Von Santa Maria Navarrese Bis Orroli

  Markieren Sie diesen Tag im Kalender: dies ist die Königsetappe der gesamten Tour. Ja, denn nach vielen Jahren der Planung und Führung von Touren auf den Straßen Sardiniens können wir bestätigen, dass der Talana-Anstieg, den Sie auf dieser Etappe bewältigen müssen, der schönste und einer der härtesten Anstiege ist, die wir hier haben. Der Anstieg, der auf 1100m des Monte Genziana gipfelt, beginnt von einer sehr niedrigen Ebene, auf etwa 15m ASL. Von dort aus sind es etwa 17 km, während der eigentliche Abschnitt beginnt - wenn der Anstieg wie eine Wand vor uns auftaucht, sind es "nur" 12 km mit einer durchschnittlichen Steigung von 6,9 %: ein Kinderspiel und der einzige "hors categorìe"-Anstieg auf der Insel, für diejenigen, die sich mehr für die Statistiken der Radprofis interessieren. Die Talana Anstiege ist schmerzhaft für die Beine, aber auch eine Freude für die Augen: die Aussicht raubt einem den Atem. Aber die Show ist noch nicht vorbei, denn diese Etappe bietet auch die unglaubliche Mont'Arbu Straße: ein Juwel unter den sardischen Straßen. Die alte SS389 durchschneidet den östlichen Teil der Gennargentu-Bergkette. Es ist ein sehr wilder Abschnitt, es gibt nicht viele Straßen wie diese in Europa und jedes Mal, wenn wir darauf fahren können, fühlen wir das Privileg, Radfahrer zu sein, während wir diese Straßen überqueren und uns die nötige Zeit nehmen, um die ganze Schönheit und Freiheit zu genießen, die das Fahren an diesen Orten gewähren kann. Nach dieser denkwürdigen Asphaltstrecke trennen uns noch ein paar Abfahrten und Anstiege von unserem Ziel: Orroli und sein familiengeführtes Albergo diffuso, wo wir auch ein schönes typisches Abendessen einnehmen werden.

• Tag 7: Von Orroli Bis Portixeddu

  Was wir - als Radfahrer - am liebsten mögen, sind jene Tage auf dem Rad, an denen man von dramatischen Änderungen der Einstellung überrascht wird. Heute ist einer dieser Tage! Von Orroli aus geht es die ersten 60 km leicht bergauf und bergab. Sobald wir die SS131 - die wichtigste sardische Staatsstraße - überqueren, treffen wir auf einen langen, völlig flachen Abschnitt, der die kultivierten Gebiete des zentralen westlichen Sardiniens durchquert. Sobald wir Guspini erreichen, betreten wir die alte Minenregion im Südwesten Sardiniens: ein Gebiet, das in den vergangenen Jahrhunderten stark vom Bergbau geprägt war und daher vom Tourismus vernachlässigt wurde. • Tag 8: Von Portixeddu Bis Pula

  Wenn mich jemand fragen würde, was ich noch gerne in eine Traum-Radtour einbauen würde, würde ich antworten, die Straßen an der Westküste, die entlang der alten Bergbauregion zwischen Fluminimaggiore und Nebida führen, und die lange Strecke, die von Porto Teulada zu den fantastischen und berühmten Sandstränden von Chia, im westlichsten Teil der Insel, führt. Und das sind genau die Straßen, auf denen wir an diesem letzten Tag fahren werden. Sie fahren hauptsächlich auf den typischen hügeligen Küstenstraßen Sardiniens, auf einigen der schönsten Küstenstraßen der Welt. Die Mitte der Etappe ist einfach auf flachen Straßen oder hügeligem Terrain. Es ist schwer zu beschreiben, was wir sehen werden, ohne Adjektive anzuhäufen, genau das, was diese Straßen nicht brauchen. Wir wünschen uns einfach, dass jeder Gast die Chance hat, mindestens einmal in seinem Leben diese Serie von Auf- und Abfahrten am Meer zu fahren, die die Radfahrer dazu bringt, Buchten und Strände kennenzulernen und ein atemberaubendes türkisfarbenes Meer zu ihrer Rechten zu genießen. Die Reise endet in Pula, wo übernachtet wird! Das Abendessen wird eine gute Gelegenheit sein, etwas zu tun, was am Ende unserer Reisen auf Sardinien passiert: sich darüber zu streiten, welche der Etappen die beste war. Sie werden auch feststellen, dass dies viel schwieriger sein kann als eine Königsetappe der Tour.

• Day 1: Welcome to Sardinia

• Day 2: From Alghero to Santu Lussurgiu

  On the opening stage, you’ll experience the special connection between coastline and mountain rides in Sardinia. You start from Alghero and ride south to Bosa on one of the most renowned coastal roads on Sardinia. The medieval village of Bosa is one of the best preserved on the island and it’s worth visiting. Enjoy an unforgettable ride through the narrow streets of the old town and stop for a quick meal. After lunch you leave the sea behind you as you head inland. The approach is trough the smooth hills of the Nurra region, up to Cuglieri. From there you continue climbing into the mountains of Montiferru. You finish the day descending into the small gem of Santu Lussurgiu, a small medieval town where a Sardinian traditional dinner and a very comfortable accommodation await you.

• Day 3: From Santu Lussurgiu to Fonni

  We ride deep into the core of Sardinia, the region called Barbagia: an area of Sardinia that has had the least external influence and so preserves - with pride - its strong traditions. The stage is split into two different parts. The first half is quite easy: downhill in the beginning, then flattish as we head towards the center of the island riding eastwards. The second part is much harder: after the bridge over Tirso lake, we start a series of long and progressive climbs that take us from the western to the central portion of the Gennargentu mountain range, within the Barbagia region. We'll ride through many small, lazy villages as we approach the most important centers of Barbagia, such as Tonara - known for superb nougat - and eventually Fonni, a winter holiday resort in the heart of a Med island. A comfortable accommodation at three-star hotel in Fonni.

• Day 4: From Fonni To Posada

  We leave Fonni and ride north toward the largest town of central Sardinia and one of the administrative capitals: Nuoro. The first 50km have a descending trend and despite two climbs, you lose about 1000m of elevation. From there we begin the first of the two main climbs of the day: 12 kilometres to Orune, and later a an amazing climb along the - extraordinarily white - Molte Albo mountain range. Many of the peaks of that famous limestone bastion are over a thousand metres high; evergreen Mediterranean scrub is all around. After a long descent, you'll find the valley of the Torpè lake and nowadays a natural park oasis: almost eight thousand hectares of unspoilt forests, trails, springs, rivers and ‘dunes’ in the territory of Bitti, Lodè, Posada. Posada is another historical village that features a nice old town and one of Sardinia’s best preserved medieval fortresses - Castello della Fava - that rises up from the village and is rife with ancient mysteries and legends. Sounds amazing, doesn't it? That's why Posada is also the place where we've arranged for your accommodation in a three-star hotel.

• Day 5: From Posada to Santa Maria Navarrese

  We leave Posada and ride southwards on a very easy first part of the stage. We cross through the village of Irgoli before we reach Galtellì. A stop in this awesome old town, will immerse us in the history of the island. Galtellì has been awarded the Touring Club Italiano’s orange flag rating for excellence. The streets, traditions and sensations of the old town center inspired the author and Nobel Prize Grazia Deledda when she set her book Canne al Vento here. After a good cappuccino we keep riding to the south. Soon after after Dorgali we reach the main climb of the day: it's about 20km long and it will take us atop Genna Silana Pass. Unfortunatly for KOM hunters the Strava KOM was set during a stage of the 2017 Giro d'Italia. Mentioning is not just a joke: as on that day in 2017 it wasn't just 150 of the best pro riders racing up this climb, but there was also a massive tailwind. This makes any attempt to break the record - for the entertainment of your Strava followers - almost certain to end in failure. All levity aside, after reaching the top you will be rewarded with a lunch stop right in front of the Gorropu gorge, the deepest canyon in Europe. A thrilling descent will take us back to the coastline, at Santa Maria Navarrese. Another glorious day of cycling ends in a comfortable accommodation at a three-star hotel.

• Day 6: From Santa Maria Navarrese to Orroli

  Mark this day in the calendar: this is the Queen stage of the tour. Today you will accumulate nearly 3000m of climbing with more than a third of that coming in one early stretch, the Talana climb. After years of riding in Sardinia we can say with without hesitation that this is the nicest and one of the toughest climbs we have here. In fact the ascent, that tops at 1100m on Monte Genziana, starts very low, at only 15m ASL. From there it's about 17km up, the first five km is a nice gradual warm up for when the climb suddenly appears like a wall in front of us, leaving a 'mere 12km', with an average gradient of 6.9% - a piece of cake - and the only 'Hors Catégorie' climb on the island, for those who are more into the pro cycling stats. The Talana is painful for the legs, but also a joy for the eyes: the views will take your breathe away. But the show is not over as this stage features also the incredible Mont'Arbu road, another gem among the Sardinian roads. The old SS389 that winds along the eastern aspect of Gennargentu mountain range. It's a very remote and wild segment, there aren't many roads like it in Europe. Every time we ride it, we experience the true privilege of being cyclist, as we can take our time and enjoy all the beauty and freedom that our sport can grant. After this memorable stretch of asphalt, a few more downhills and ascents separate us from our destination: Orroli and it's family-run Albergo diffuso where we will have a nice typical dinner.

• Day 7: From Orroli to Portixeddu

  What we like best - as cyclists - are those days on the bike where you get surprised by dramatic changes of setting. Today is one of these days! Leaving Orroli, the first 60km are on easy rolling hills, as soon as we cross the SS131 - the main Sardinian highway - we meet a long, totally flat section, crossing the cultivated feilds of the central western Sardinia. Riding through Guspini signals we are once again entering a mountainous region. This is the ancient mining region of southwest Sardinia: an area exploited for diverse minerals from the time of the Phoenicians until the 1970s, and thus neglected by tourism. Since the closure of the mines, nature has worked to reclaim much of this land. Mass tourism didn't develop here due to the lack infrastructure and... well, you just need to wait and see the amazing outcome of this historical process. From Guspini on, we cycle through one of the wildest areas on the island and end the ride at an awesome beach in Portixeddu. Today you'll again sleep by the sea, at a three-star hotel in Portixeddu.

• Day 8: From Portixeddu to Pula

  If someone were to ask me one road to include in a dream cycle tour, I would struggle between the west coast road that cuts through the old mining region between Fluminimaggiore and Nebida, and the long southerly stretch that goes from Porto Teulada to the awesome sandy beaches of Chia. Rather than choose I have combined them to create the last stage of the Ultimate Sardinia. You will start and finish the day riding these remarkable undulating coastal roads. The middle of the section is easy on flat roads or rolling terrain. It's hard to describe what you'll see without piling up adjectives, and to do so does this stage a disservice. We truly believe this stage should be on every cyclists bucket list. This series of up and downs will bring you past beaches, cliffs and coves with the stunning turquoise sea as your constant companion. The trip ends in Pula, where the last hotel is! Dinner will be a great occasion to do something that often happens at the end of our trips: arguing about which stage was the best. You will find that this can be just as strenuous as the queen stage of the tour.

• Giorno 2: Da Alghero a Santu Lussurgiu

  Nella tappa di apertura, sperimenterete il particolare collegamento tra le coste e le montagne della Sardegna. Si parte da Alghero e si pedala verso sud fino a Bosa su una delle strade costiere più rinomate della Sardegna. Il villaggio medievale di Bosa è uno dei meglio conservati dell'isola. E vale la pena visitarlo. Godetevi un'indimenticabile passeggiata attraverso le stradine del centro storico. E fare una sosta per un pasto veloce all'interno del centro storico è semplicemente speciale. Bosa è anche il luogo dove ci si lascia il mare alle spalle. L'approccio è attraverso le dolci colline della Nurra, fino a Cuglieri. Da lì, una lunga salita sui monti del Montiferru porta alla piccola perla chiamata Santu Lussurgiu, un piccolo borgo medievale dove vi aspettano una cena tradizionale sarda e una sistemazione molto confortevole.

• Giorno 3: Da Santu Lussurgiu a Fonni

  Andremo in profondità nel cuore della Sardegna, nella regione chiamata Barbagia: una zona della Sardegna che ha avuto meno influenza esterna e che quindi conserva - con orgoglio - le sue forti tradizioni. La tappa è divisa in due parti diverse. La prima è abbastanza facile: in discesa all'inizio, poi in piano, mentre ci dirigiamo verso il centro dell'isola pedalando verso est. La seconda parte è molto più difficile: dopo il ponte sul lago Tirso, iniziamo una serie di lunghe e progressive salite che ci portano dalla parte occidentale a quella centrale del Gennargentu, nel cuore della Barbagia. Pedaleremo attraverso molti piccoli e pigri paesini mentre ci avvicineremo ai centri più importanti della Barbagia, come Tonara - nota per il superbo torrone artigianale - e infine Fonni, una località di villeggiatura invernale nel cuore di un'isola del Mediterraneo. • Giorno 4: Da Fonni a Posada

  Lasciamo Fonni e ci dirigiamo a nord verso il capoluogo della Sardegna centrale e una delle capitali amministrative: Nuoro. I primi 50 km hanno un andamento in discesa e anche se con qualche tratto di salita in mezzo, si perdono circa 1000 metri di dislivello. Da lì, prendiamo la prima delle due salite principali della giornata: 12 chilometri fino a Orune, ed infine un'incredibile salita lungo la catena montuosa - straordinariamente bianca - di Monte Albo. Molte delle cime di quel famoso bastione calcareo superano i mille metri di altezza; la macchia mediterranea è dappertutto e sempreverde. Dopo una lunga discesa, si trova la valle del lago di Torpè che oggi è un'oasi protetta: quasi ottomila ettari di boschi incontaminati, sentieri, sorgenti, fiumi e 'dune' nel territorio di Bitti, Lodè, Posada. Posada è un altro centro storico con un bel centro storico e una delle fortezze medievali meglio conservate della Sardegna - il Castello della Fava - che sorge nel borgo ed è circondato da antichi misteri e leggende. Sembra incredibile, non è vero? Ecco perché Posada è anche il luogo dove abbiamo organizzato per voi la sistemazione in un hotel a tre stelle.

• Giorno 5: Da Posada a Santa Maria Navarrese

  Lasciamo Posada e ci dirigiamo verso sud in una prima parte di tappa molto facile. Attraversiamo i paesi di Irgoli e Galtellì. Una sosta nel suo splendido centro storico, ci farà immergere nella storia dell'isola. Galtellì è stata premiata dal Touring Club Italiano con la bandiera arancione per l'eccellenza del suo antico centro storico. Le sue vie, le tradizioni e le sue suggestioni hanno ispirato l'autrice e premio Nobel Grazia Deledda che ha ambientato qui il suo libro Canne al Vento. Dopo un buon cappuccino continuiamo a pedalare verso sud e subito dopo Dorgali prendiamo la salita principale della giornata: è lunga circa 20 km e ci porterà in cima al Passo Genna Silana. Già Gran Premio della Montagna del Giro d'Italia 2017. La citazione non è casuale: avere 150 ciclisti professionisti che già percorso questa salita, inoltre in una giornata con un vento di coda super forte, rende ogni tentativo di battere il record - per il piacere dei vostri seguaci di Strava - un enorme non senso. Lasciando da parte ogni velleità, teniamo un passo tranquillo e ci godiamo anche con spensieratezza una sosta gastronomica proprio di fronte alla gola di Gorropu, il canyon più profondo d'Europa.

  Un'emozionante discesa ci riporterà sulla costa, a Santa Maria Navarrese. Un'altra gloriosa giornata in bicicletta si conclude in una confortevole sistemazione in un hotel a tre stelle.

• Giorno 6: Da Santa Maria Navarrese a Orroli

  Segniamo questo giorno nel calendario: è la tappa regina di tutto il tour. Sì, perché dopo molti anni di progettazione e di tour guidati sulle strade della Sardegna, possiamo affermare che la salita di Talana, che si affronta in questa tappa, è la più bella e una delle più dure che abbiamo in Sardegna. La salita, che culmina a 1100m di Monte Genziana, inizia da un livello molto basso, a circa 15m ASL. Da lì si sale per circa 17 km, mentre il segmento vero e proprio inizia quando la salita appare come una parete davanti a noi: da lì sono "solo 12 km", con una pendenza media del 6,9%: un gioco da ragazzi, e l'unica salita "hors categorìe" dell'isola, per chi è appassionato di ciclismo professionistico. La salita di Talana è dolorosa per le gambe, ma anche una gioia per gli occhi: la vista toglie il fiato. Ma lo spettacolo non è finito, perché in questa tappa c'è anche l'incredibile strada del Mont'Arbu: un gioiello tra le strade della Sardegna. La vecchia SS389 taglia la parte orientale del Gennargentu. Si tratta di un segmento molto selvaggio, non ci sono molte strade come questa in Europa e ogni volta che possiamo pedalare qui, sentiamo il privilegio di essere ciclisti mentre attraversiamo queste strade prendendoci tutto il tempo necessario per godere di tutta la bellezza e la libertà che la pedalare tra questi luoghi può garantire. Dopo questo memorabile tratto di asfalto, qualche altra discesa e salita ci separano dalla nostra destinazione: Orroli e il suo Albergo diffuso a conduzione familiare dove faremo anche una bella cena tipica.

• Giorno 7: Da Orroli a Portixeddu

  Quello che ci piace di più - come ciclisti - sono quei giorni in bicicletta in cui si rimane sorpresi da drastici cambiamenti di scenario. Oggi è uno di questi giorni! Fuori Orroli, i primi 60 km sono in facili saliscendi, non appena incrociamo la SS131 - la principale strada statale sarda - incontriamo un lungo tratto totalmente pianeggiante, che attraversa le aree coltivate della Sardegna centro-occidentale. Appena arrivati a Guspini, entriamo nell'antica regione mineraria della Sardegna sud-occidentale: un'area fortemente interessata dalle attività minerarie dei secoli passati, e quindi trascurata dal turismo. Ma da quando le miniere sono state chiuse, la natura si è ripresa questa terra, il turismo di massa non ha potuto sviluppare un'area priva di infrastrutture turistiche e... beh, basta aspettare e vedere l'incredibile risultato di questo processo storico. Da Guspini in poi pedaleremo lungo una delle zone più selvagge dell'isola e concluderemo la tappa in una spiaggia fantastica e selvaggia a Portixeddu. Oggi dormiremo di nuovo in riva al mare, in un hotel a tre stelle a Portixeddu.

• Giorno 8: Da Portixeddu a Pula

  Se qualcuno mi chiedesse cosa vorrei ancora includere in un tour ciclistico da sogno, risponderei le strade della costa occidentale che costeggiano l'antica regione mineraria tra Fluminimaggiore e Nebida, e il lungo tratto che va da Porto Teulada alle fantastiche e famose spiagge sabbiose di Chia, nella parte più occidentale dell'isola. E proprio le strade che percorreremo in quest'ultimo giorno. Si percorrono per lo più le tipiche ed ondulate strade costiere della Sardegna, su alcune delle più belle strade vista mare del mondo. La parte centrale della tappa è facile su strade pianeggianti o su terreno ondulato. È difficile descrivere ciò che vedremo senza accumulare aggettivi, esattamente ciò di cui queste strade non hanno bisogno. Desideriamo solo che ogni ospite abbia la possibilità di pedalare, almeno una volta nella vita, questa serie di saliscendi in riva al mare, che fa incontrare ai ciclisti calette, spiagge e godere di un mare turchese mozzafiato alla loro destra. Il viaggio termina a Pula, dove si pernotta! La cena sarà un'ottima occasione per fare qualcosa che accade alla fine dei nostri viaggi in Sardegna: discutere su quale sia stata la tappa migliore. Scoprirete anche voi che questo può essere molto più difficile della stessa tappa regina del tour.
