Get inspired

A genuine gravel adventure is meant to lead us far from the ordinary, urging us to explore beyond the confines of our comfort zones, leaving the familiarity of our backyards behind!

Giovanni Lamieri, tour designer at SardiniaCycling

Dream a dream with us. Picture this: gravel bikes beneath us, venturing into the untouched wilderness, far from the humdrum of cars, crowds, rules, work and pressure. Dream a journey that unfolds on roads that demand our undivided attention, directing it towards the beauty of nature, the serenity of silence, the rhythmic cadence of our pedals, and the steady thump of our heartbeats.

Our dream destination? Sardinia, explored on gravel bikes. You'll explore the wild Ogliastra, the traditional Barbagia and focus on the Gennargentu massif. An immersive experience that weaves us back into the fabric of nature, offering an escape from the mundane to a realm that feels like an entirely different planet. Here, fatigue is not a hindrance but a cherished reward, a cold beer serves as the ultimate electrolyte, and goat cheese becomes the energy bar of choice.

We meticulously planned this tour on a map, yet nothing could have prepared us for the sheer thrill as our wheels traced the lines during the first tour rehearsal. By the end of it, we realized this wasn't just another Sardinia trip: it was an Epic Gravel Adventure.

Crafted meticulously, our trip mirrors this dream. It's a challenge, yet not a merciless one – a journey feasible for most, especially those enamored with the art of gravel biking. The route is circular, ensuring that where you commence is precisely where you'll conclude. It's a wild adventure, navigating asphalt roads devoid of traffic and gravel paths that accommodate the capabilities of a gravel bike.

Set against the backdrop of a unique region in Sardinia, this journey unfolds in an area where the meeting of breathtaking sea and untouched mountains is nothing short of spectacular.

Accommodations are carefully chosen, favoring small family hotels and agriturismo, strengthening the bond between you and the surroundings. In the end, our aim is for you to reflect on the trip for an entire year, savoring the highlights of an adventure that beckons you to relive it again and again.

Ride and dream with us!

We designed this Gravel Biking Trip after a dream. We made it challenge but not killer, either physically or technically. We made it ridable by most.

Day 2: From Barisardo to Jerzu

Embrace the dust on your bike and the gritty tan on your legs as we kick off our adventure. The initial leg is a breeze, covering the first 40 kilometers with just 500 meters of elevation gain. Most of this stretch glides along quiet secondary roads, allowing you to revel in the freedom of the open path. The asphalt under your wheels hums a soft melody, a prelude to the challenges that lie ahead.

Then, the terrain transforms, and we face the climbs. The final 30 kilometers promise an ascent of slightly more than 1000 meters. Brace yourself for the spectacle of these climbs—serene, breathtaking, and far removed from the hustle and bustle. Each pedal stroke propels you higher, unveiling panoramic views that make the effort worthwhile.

The journey concludes at your hotel, nestled within a park amidst the famed peaks of Ogliastra. This subregion, known for its natural beauty, becomes the canvas for the closing chapter of our day. Day 3: From Jerzu to Belvì

Transition from the tranquility of a small forest-immersed hotel to the cultural richness of a traditional mountain village nestled in the heart of Sardinia's Barbagia region. Today's journey unfolds on the longest stretch of gravel roads throughout the entire trip—an exhilarating 27 kilometers. This trail serves as the shortest link between the Ogliastra region and the towering peaks of Gennargentu central massif, promising an adventure that will leave an indelible mark.

Departing from the hotel, our route ventures into the breathtaking Scala San Giorgio, a natural monument that carves through a canyon, offering a spectacular ride through nature's grandeur. Following this, prepare for another awe-inspiring sight: the Arizona-style peak of Perda Liana. As the gravel crunches beneath your tires, the landscape transforms, and you find yourself on a shortcut leading deep into the heart of Sardinia's most traditional territories.

The trail culminates at Passo Tascusì, perched at the pinnacle of this journey. From here, the descent into Belvì, a charming mountain village steeped in traditions, awaits. As you roll into this cultural haven, surrounded by the majestic peaks of Gennargentu, the echoes of your gravel adventure resonate through the rugged landscapes of Barbagia.

Day 4: From Belvì to Fonni

Prepare for a gravel adventure that takes a daring turn, all for a noble cause. Today's challenge leads us to scale the highest accessible mountain on a bike in Sardinia—Mount Bruncu Spina. To achieve this feat and connect its western and eastern sides, we've orchestrated an exciting hat trick, introducing a short but thrilling single trail.

This particular section is feasible by the more technically adept riders that may opt to navigate it on their bikes. For those who prefer a different approach, a short walk while pushing the bike paves the way forward. The effort invested is rewarded generously when you reach the summit at 1830 meters.

The panoramic reward awaits—a breathtaking 360-degree view that encompasses the majestic surroundings. As far as the eye can see, the rugged landscapes of Sardinia unfold in all their glory. Standing at this vantage point, there's a sense of accomplishment, knowing that you've conquered the peak, and from here on, it's an exhilarating downhill descent leading you to Fonni.

Day 5: From Fonni to Orgosolo

The fourth stage is a journey between two iconic towns nestled deep within the heart of Sardinia, connected by a mesmerizing route that winds through the untamed wilderness. This path, a blend of on and off-road stretches, immerses you in the rugged beauty of the island.

As you ascend to the Correboi pass, the landscape unfolds beneath you, revealing a breathtaking panorama. The descent then goes southwards and takes you along the old, now semi-abandoned panoramic road, offering glimpses into a bygone era.

Heading northward once more, you traverse the Gennargentu National Park through one of its most untamed trails. The Montes forest becomes your companion, a dense and untouched realm that testifies to the raw beauty of nature in this paradise island.

The journey crescendos in the renowned town of Orgosolo, celebrated worldwide for its mural paintings depicting poignant political and social themes. Each stroke of paint on the walls tells a story, intertwining the rich history of Sardinia with the challenges of contemporary society.

In seamlessly blending the allure of nature with the tapestry of history, this gravel trip becomes more than a ride; it transforms into an odyssey, connecting you to the essence of this enchanting island.

Day 6: From Orgosolo to Calagonone

Stage five unfolds on charming roads—ancient, winding, and now peacefully secluded from car traffic, cradled in the embrace of nature's neglect. Starting the descent from Orgosolo, these narrow pathways guide you through a journey of discovery, revealing the hidden gems of Sardinia.

As you wind your way down, the landscape transforms, welcoming you to the valley of a renowned wine region. Traverse among the vineyards, each row a testament to the rich terroir of this fertile land. The route follows the gentle curves of the Cedrino River, a soothing companion guiding your way.

On narrow, highly panoramic countryside road you're leading to the marvel that is Cala Cartoe. Here, the glistening waters beckon, and we suggest a pause—a moment to savor the tranquility of this famous jewel beach. Perhaps even a swim, immersing yourself in the refreshing embrace of the Mediterranean.

Resuming the journey, the route meanders further along the coast, unveiling the wonder that is Calagonone. This small touristic town, nestled on the shores of Sardinia, welcomes you back to the lively and bustling atmosphere of the coastline. It's a delightful contrast, a transition from the solitude of gravel paths to the vibrant energy of a seaside haven. In this stage, the gravel adventure weaves seamlessly with the allure of Sardinia's coastline, offering a diverse and memorable experience.

The concluding stage, crafted with care, introduces a road that stands as one of the island's most beautiful—the SS125. This scenic route, adorned with unmissable vistas and blessed with sparse traffic, becomes the canvas for our return journey from north to south.

The initial stretch entails a long and gentle climb, easing you into the farewell ride. The road then unfurls into a spectacular sequence of ascents and descents, a thrilling dance that showcases the highlights of this famous road. As the journey progresses, a prolonged descent and a tranquil, flat section guide you towards the lagoons encircling Arbatax.

In this captivating environment, the gravel ring reaches its conclusion, leaving you with memories etched in the dust and gravel of Sardinia. The dream that began with the whirr of gravel beneath your tires now takes its final bow, with the hope that you'll be dreaming alongside us about your next cycling adventure with Sardinia Cycling. Planning For Your Epic Sardinia Gravel Edition

Packing and Weather

Sardinia is a region known for mild Mediterranean weather. It generally features warm, dry weather which makes these rides particularly enjoyable. The spring and fall can see the highs range from the 18s to 25s (Celsius), while the lows are generally between 14 and 18. Summer highs are generally between 28 and 25. We always recommend bringing along riding layers and even a bit of rain (might happen in Spring and Fall) gear so you can keep riding comfortably throughout the day.

Transfers

Sardinia Cycling arranges group transfers from and to the closest airport for the trip: Cagliari. Individual transfers can be also planned and the cost might depend from the departure or arrival location, from the transfer time and it can also be influenced by the presence of bulky luggage, like a bike case. Other transport option is public transport. About this last opportunity, we suggest you using Google Maps and select 'public transport' from and to your selected destination. In any case, we're ready to help you selecting the quicker, smoother and most cost effective solution.

Go Custom

Sometimes your trip on Sardinia simply isn’t long enough! Extend your stay for the best vacation possible. If you wish to spend a few days in our lovely island either before or after your trip, and need assistance making those plans, we're available help. Self guided and supported trips can be extended too and that can happen in any intermediate location along the itinerary: we can help selecting the best one!

Terrain

One thing riders learn soon is that Sardinia is hilly. The terrain is varied, with gradual and short, or very long and progressive climbs throughout the week. The Gravel Ring is best suited for our 'Challenge' riders. The routes have been designed to avoid busy roadways, that are very rare in a large and sparsely populated island. However, very little urban riding and short sections of busy roads are unavoidable in Sardinia. There are a few hundred meters on single trail as well has a few short section where carrying the bike is needed: it's little and for a good reason!
