How to train for a trip on Sardinia

Is "training" even the right word? Let’s put it this way: how do we prepare for a cycling trip in Sardinia? Is there anything specific you should keep in mind for this island?

If by training we mean getting your body ready for something coming up, then yes — we can use that word. Even though it sounds very “race-oriented,” and our idea of a trip is far from racing, the training mindset can still help you feel great and get the most out of your holiday.

Have you picked the right level?

Our trip catalog includes both more demanding and more relaxed trips. Each tour is assigned a difficulty level based on riding time, distance, and elevation gain. The first and most important step — and usually what happens — is choosing a level that doesn’t push you too far outside your comfort zone.

The dice is cast: how can I get fit?

Whether you've chosen a level that feels right or something a little more challenging, we suggest preparing by replicating some of the conditions you'll experience on the island. Of course, not everything can be mimicked — if you live in a cold climate, you won’t be able to simulate Sardinia's summer heat. And since our guests often lead busy lives, there's no point in recommending a dramatic increase in training hours.

Instead, here’s a simple and proven plan that works well for most riders:

  1. You’ll be riding long distances on consecutive days. So instead of one long Sunday ride, try splitting your time into two medium rides — for example, 3 hours on both Saturday and Sunday. Doing this consistently in the months before the trip has a big impact on your endurance.
  2. If you can ride more during the week — even on a stationary bike — focus on maintaining a steady, endurance-level effort. Using a heart rate monitor or power meter helps keep the intensity in check.
  3. Prioritize rest and quality sleep: recovery is key to improving fitness.

As you can see, there’s nothing extreme here — it’s just about anticipating what you'll be doing during the trip. For many of our guests, this preparation becomes a healthy routine, and they return the following season ready to take on a more challenging tour!
