The wild and the beautiful
Ogliastra Cross is a mountain biking tour that take place in the eastern Sardinia. It's a biking adventure that will stick into the mind of mountain bikers.
Nothing like this is available in a wide range, on any other island in the Mediterranean, and certainly not in Europe or in the central Alps.
It starts from the Gulf of Arbatax through the mountainous regions of central Sardinia, touches the granite massif of Gennargentu and arid plateaus of Supramonte, before descending through canyons carved out of the limestone rocks, down to the sea in the central east coast, with its beautiful caves, white sandy beaches and turquoise sea.
But this tour not only offers beautiful scenery changes, but it also surprises with its absolute loneliness that our route, drawn in the most rugged and inaccessible nature, let us discover.
We can find Mediterranean scrub, oak, chestnut, Mediterranean forests, bizarre rock formations and plateaux in a harsh environment, where horses grazing free, donkeys, pigs, goats, wild sheep, and birds of prey circling overhead, show that there's lot of life here. Only man seems not to be foreseen in this small continent.
Too hard and full of hardship is the daily life of the shepherds, and in fact there aren't major settlements in this area.
It was here, more than 4000 years ago, that developed the sophisticated civilization of the nuraghis, impressive stone fortifications survived as watchtowers over the millennia.
From the first to the last stage increases our wonder at the beauty of the landscape, that we can explore on good cart tacks, but also along single tracks that require a bit of control of the bike and driving skills.
The tour takes the form of a ring in the central-eastern Sardinia, through the mountainous regions of the Ogliastra region, Gennargentu National Park and it ends at the inaccessible coves of the coast between Baunei and Dorgali. The hotels are located in areas of historical and natural interest and offer a simple but tasty cuisine, as well as the high quality wines of this island.

Our Route

Day 1: Arrival day

Arrival at airport (Cagliari, Olbia or Alghero). Transfer to Barisardo. Dinner and overnight in Barisardo.

Here we go! We leave the picturesque beach of Barisardo and its Aragonese tower behind us. The adventure begins. This first stage includes two climbs, the first is pretty challenging, but with stunning views of the sea of Ogliastra. The second, longer but less steep, ends at hotel, also passing through a wind farm. Dinner and overnight nearby Jerzu.

A truly scenic jewel is the regional park between Ulassai and Osini. A mixture of oak woods and Mediterranean bush, in the midst of these, always jumps out of the omnipresent Dolomitic stone. This is haven for Sardinian wildlife. The stage is characterized by some steep climbs, but this is, on the whole, an easy stage, that ends with a passage through the natural monument of Scala San Giorgio. Then we reach the hotel in Ulassai. Overnight in Ulassai.
Gennargentu National Park

Gennargentu National Park

Once again the stage shows a change of the landscape. 'Heels of Ogliastra' are called the towering spiers of Dolomitic stone that characterize these mountains, as they remember vividly the shape of a enormous boot heel upside down. We ride through a fantastic nature, meeting the vestiges of the Nuragic civilization who has lived here more than 4000 years ago, before entering the territory of Gennargentu, the top of Sardinia. Arrival at Villanova, dinner and two nights in Agriturismo.

The top of the Gennargentu massif is visible right after we start riding, the highest peak close at hand. During this round trip we get closer to the summit along a route that allows us to immerse ourselves in the wild solitude of these mountains. We meet freely grazing cows, pigs, horses and donkeys, which can multiply freely, birds of prey circling overhead looking for prey: what we rarely encounter are people. The few shepherds we could meet, nowadays driver old pick-up trucks, but a picture of the past and the harsh life of these places will be evoked by your guide, leaving it up to you to envision the life of those who live and work in these places. The tour can vary in difficulty and length with two difficulty levels. After no more than 64 kilometers, chosing the long route, we are back to our Agriturismo in Villanova. Dinner and overnight.

Gennargentu National Park

Another day when we cycle through at least three completely different landscapes: from conifers and chestnut trees of Villa Grande, we go on the dry Supramonte, then through a chain of hills in the Barbagia region, in the heart of Sardinia, and back to the carsic areas of the eastern cost of Ogliastra. On top of Monte Olinie we enjoy a 360 degrees view: the Gulf of Arbatax, was our starting point a few days ago, the Gennargentu Mountains, where we have just cycled, and the long beaches of Cala Gonone, where the tour will end on next day. But from the point of view to our hotel there is still a long way to go, through plateaux and valleys, without any human settlement. With a little luck we will be able to spot the moufflons, a rare and protected species of wild goat. Dinner and overnight in Genna Silana.

A stage that develops in full in the sector of the Gennargentu National Park overlooking the sea. Among the contrasting colors of the deep green of juniper and the turquoise of the sea, all on a blinding white background given by the limestone rocks, we cycle down to Cala Luna. Among singletracks and dirt roads that give an unrivaled excitement, we ride on a route that can well be included between the most beautiful trails in the world. In Cala Luna we relax and refresh, enjoying this true naturalistic jewell. The return by boat adds big charm to this spectacular stage. Which ends in Calagonone. Overnight in hotel in front of the beach.
